KYWEBSTE-L is for individual messages to be delivered to your e-mail address. As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, you will receive a copy of the message.

KYWEBSTE-D is for a digest of several accumulated messages to be delivered to your email address. As each subscriber to the list sends messages to the list address, they are put into a digest to be delivered later. The digest is generated approximately once a day and delivered to digest subscribers. This option is handy for people who don't want multiple messages to accumulate in their mail box.

GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO THE LIST

The primary purpose of the list is to aid in the research of our Webster County ancestors by assisting us in making benificial contacts. To receive a response to a specific query, however, it is still best to post your query to the Webster County Message Board , mainly because of the magnificent search engine available for this board. Messages posted to the mailing list are archived at RootsWeb but they must be searched for a specific word and it can be a tedious process.

My thinking is that a good message for the mailing list would be something like this:

My Webster County surnames include Bridwell, Crews, Higginson, Marks, Poole, Sparks, Thornberry, Wigginton and Woods.

I am interested in contacting others researching these surnames and am eager to share information.

I have information about many of these families online at My Personal Genealogy Records http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cpalmer/

Messages like this will allow potential cousins to contact you privately to pursue your ancestors without making heavy traffic on the list. Let's always keep in mind that many people pay a high price for their access and do not appreciate idle chatter in their list mail.

Please feel free to post the URL of web pages that concern Webster County to the list. It doesn't matter if the URL belongs to your own page or someone else's page that you have found useful in your research.

I also hope we will post information to the list about researching on location in Webster County. Many of us do not live in Webster County, or even in Kentucky, and when we get an opportunity to travel there for research, we need help using available resources in the most efficient manner.

THE TECHNICALITIES of posting to the list: (I am getting very cranky in my old age)

* keep quoting to a minimum. "Quoting" is repeating text of the message you are replying to. Some quoting is necessary to remind other readers what the thread is about but do try to use good judgement. Quoting the previous writer's signature block or surname list is totally unnecessary.

* please submit your messages only in plain text. Many of us are using software that cannot read HTML-formatted messages with colored fonts. If you do not know how to turn off HTML in your e-mail program, contact me and I will assist you. Submit messages in mixed-case, never in all caps.

* be specific in your subject line; don't use a subject line like "inquiry about my family line". A good subject line can often determine whether your message will be read. It is not unusual for folks to receive 200-300 e-mails per day and many are quick to hit the "delete" key after viewing an unspecific subject line.

PLEASE DON'T.......

* post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, etc. For information on virus hoaxes and urban legends see http://www.kumite.com/myths/ among others.

* send file attachments (messages with files appended) to the list. If you have a file you would like to share with the members, announce what you have to offer, then send the file only to those who request it, via private e-mail.

* send messages exceeding 5 kilobytes in length (approximately 100 lines of text).

* make rude comments or flame others on the list! For definitions of flaming and related information see http://www.man.ac.uk/~zlsiira/Netiquette/flame.html
