COUNTY FORMATION

Allegany County was formed in 1789 from portions of Washington County. In 1872 Allegany County lost its westernmost territory to the formation of Garrett County.

Its name stems from "Oolikhann," which means beautiful stream.

Cumberland is the county seat.
