Cumberland Times 10 Jul 1896 Mrs. Joseph Andrews, formerly of Barton but now of Macon City, MO, is paying a visit to her sister-in-law, Mrs. John W. Young on Greene Street. This is Mrs. Andrew's first visit to her native county for 17 years. She will leave for home on July 30.
Joseph Matthew Andrews was a small boy when the family moved to Barton, MD
where he lived with the exception of one year when he was about 18 years old he
spent in England. On July 22, 1873. Father Joseph met Fannie (b Nov 22 1855 in
Barton MD) in Barton, MD. The first child Cora May was born July 26 1874 The
second child was born Jan 19, 1877 in Barton MD named William Joseph.
In 1878 Joseph came west seeking a new location, first to Ohio then on to
Bevier, MO with him was a Mr. Gibby of Barton. The 2 went to Kansas and took up
a home stead in Western Kansas. They returned to Bevier and worked in a coal
mine. In 1879, Fannie and 2 children came to Bevier and from there the family
set out in a covered wagon to establish a new home on the homestead.
The sod house, stories of rattlesnakes, Kansas sand and wind was too much so
after 3 weeks of camping in the wagon, they came back to Bevier and settle with
other new comers (Bevier was mostly a Welsh Colony at that time.)
On their way to Kansas their wagons bore the slogan “To Kansas or Bust” As they
go further west, they net east bound wagons bearing the slogan “In Kansas, We
Busted”.
They came back to Bevier, in 1880 they moved to a rented farm near Bevier, in
Bevier township (2 mi. from Bevier) In this year the 3rd child Lillian Edith was
born Dec 26. 1880. She died in 1881 OK at milking time sitting in the middle of
the bed. died before midnight of a spasm. Kate was born here in July 1882. In
Oct 1882 bought a farm with very little money 80 acres near Bloomington in
Liberty township 6 mi. north west of Macon. This place was home until father
Joseph’s death Aug 14 1930. Nellie, George R & Theresa were born here.
William Joseph Andrews hit in leg with rock at the mine. broke his leg, never recovered.

Joseph Mathew Andrews was born in Bristol, England, Feb. 4, 1853.
He came with his parents to Frostburg, Maryland in 1855. Later the family
removed to Barton, Maryland where Mr. Andrews was reared. He was married to Miss
Fannie Ayers, July 22, 1873 in Barton, Maryland. They came to Bevier, Missouri
in1878 or 1879. In 1882 they moved to the farm which is now the home.
Seven children came into this family. One, a little girl, died in infancy. A son
passed away in his early twenties.
The surviving children are: Mrs. Cora Dixon, Omaha, Nebr., Mrs. D. A. McBeth,
Mrs. W. C. Smoot, George R. Andrews of the home community and Miss Kate Andrews,
who teaches in Hardin College, Mexico, Missouri.
Mr. Andrews has 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Mr. Andrews was the eldest of ten children, four brothers and five sisters. Two
brothers and three sisters survive him. Illness of some and distance for others
make it impossible for them to be present.
Mr. and Mrs. Andrews spent six weeks last fall visiting these relatives in
Maryland and West Virginia.
Through his illness he was most patient and appreciative. Not once did he
complain of pain or suffering.
Everything that family and friends did for his care and comfort was always all
right. No word of criticism or objection came from him.
He enjoyed the visits of the many kind friends who came to see him and until his
last day was able to speak with all who came.
Funeral was conducted at Old Bloomington M.E. Church by the Rev. Dr. George E.
Poole of Callao. Interment in Bevier cemetery.
