Henry and Sidney (THOMPSON) SHAW lost their baby daughter, Harriet SHAW, when she was aged 1 year 4 months 28 days. She was born 17 Dec 1825, and she died 13 May 1827. (Their other children lived to adulthood.) Harriet was buried in Morrison Cemetery, Reynolds, Allegany County, outside the cement border around her grandparents, Rev. William & Charlotte SHAW, and some children of William SHAW, Jr. & Patsy. The photo was taken in 1997. Harriet's stone was facing toward the stones of her grandparents. The tree in the background was steadily pushing Harriet's stone forward. Imagine the tree's size in 1827. During cemetery restoration, Harriet's stone was removed from beneath the tree and set near her gandparents.

Jane B. SHAW and John J. BARNES obtained a marriage license on 03 Sep 1843. Whether they ever actually married is not entirely clear. If they married, Jane's early death, 15 Jun 1844, was about 9 months after the marriage, which suggests that she could have died in childbirth. She was aged 24 years, 3 months, 19 days. Jane's burial plot, also in Morrison Cemetery, has no border and her stone faces in the opposite direction of all the other Shaw stones in the vicinity.

(John J. BARNES married Nancy B. SHAW, per license 18 June 1846. Nancy's mother could have been the daughter of one of Rev. William SHAW, Sr.'s sons, George, John, or Joseph.)

Charlotte (SHAW) JACOBS was born April 30, 1824. She married Norman JACOBS. Charlotte died 02 Oct 1869, aged 45 years 5 months 2 days. She was buried close to her sisters in Morrison Cemetery. Her plot is enclosed on three sides with iron fencing. Only the entrance way, where a gate may have been at one time, is opened. Charlotte's stone could not be found in 1990 when the Genealogical Society inventoried the cemetery. At that time the cemetery was in such bad condition, that many stones were buried under years of growth, or broken and scattered around the cemetery. Those restoring the cemetery located many lost stones and repaired and reset many of the broken stones.

Joseph SHAW Family

Joseph SHAW, Sr., the first born son of Henry & Sydney, was also the first pioneer in the family. He married Highly DUCKWORTH in 1839, and shortly thereafter, he moved to the farm community of Beacon, Iowa. There he raised his family.

Joseph SHAW, Jr., was born in May of 1860, nearly four months after his father died. He married Ada EVANS (born 24 Oct 1860 - died 21 Apr 1934). It is believed that Joseph, Jr., replaced his father's original headstone, either at the time of his mother's death in 1900, or when his wife died in 1934.

Diane STULTZ, a direct descendent of Joseph & Highly SHAW, provided photos and info.

After the Civil War, Thompson and Louisa traveled west to Iowa, to where his older brother, Joseph SHAW, settled. After a short stay in Beacon, Mahaska County, Thompson and Louisa ultimately settled their family in Taintor.
