I am trying to find out more about the Hiram/Harmon TWIGG and Mary Ann (Mollie) HUDSON/HUTSON. They married in Cumberland 9/4/1871 and shortly thereafter moved across the river to Doe Gulley, WV (near Paw Paw). I am trying to find out who Mary Ann's parents were. I understand there were Hudsons in Allegany Co. from VA and PA. In the census records, Mary Ann is listed as PA born with her father being born in DE and her mother born in VA (may have later become WV).

Elizabeth had a brother, William WILLISON, Jr. who was living in Perry County, Ohio in 1842, when his father died. Junior's wife was Esther/Hester/Easter HAMILTON. Does anyone know if she was the sister to Robert HAMILTON, husband of Elizabeth noted above??? Many thanks,

Can anyone tell me the TWIGGs that lived in the Twigg Hollow area of Green Ridge State Forest? I am trying to locate ancestors of Harrison & Jane TWIGG who supposedly operated Lock #60 before their sons Hiram, Albert and Moses Harrison & Jane were born around 1824. Their son Hiram married Mary Ann (Mollie) HUTSON; Albert married Sarah HUDSON; Ruth TWIGG married Henry KASEKAMP. Albert TWIGG and Ruth KASEKAMP have children buried in the Brinkman-Rine Cemetery. If you can give ANY information on this family, I will be very grateful.

P.S. Was there ever a church at the Brinkman-Rine Cemetery? .

Joseph & Florence (HARE) SHARON, daughter of Aurelia HARE, were my great-grandparents and lived in Little Orleans, Allegany Co., MD. They are buried in the Martin Cemetery at Little Orleans. Joseph and Florence had all their children in Morgan Co. in the Magnolia - Paw Paw area. Joseph worked for the Railroad and I understand they lived in a company house close to the railroad and canal in Little Orleans.

I understand they rolled back the rugs and had dances at their house for the neighborhood to play music, dance, sing and had a great time. One lady I met went to school with Joseph and Florence's two grandchildren, which they raised. Their names were Adeline and Pansy. One of these granddaughters' husbands used to be a mail carrier for Hancock, I believe. I do not know the last names.

I am trying to find out more about this line and hope there are other descendants that I can connect with. I have quite a bit of family documentation on this line to share.

(2) William MILLER is my problem child. I have no more information than what I have included here, other than he may have been a drifter and lived with the LARGENT family (McCool neighbor in WV).

William H. MILLER b. 7-31-1864 in Cumberland, Maryland d. 12-28-1896 in Duglas, West Virginia (coal mining accident or related illness) m. Lucy Kate MCCOOL on 10-4-1893 in Cumberland, Maryland

Looking for long lost cousins;

My grandfather, John Hiram COLEMAN was born in Cumberland, Allegany County Maryland on the 12 Dec.1849 and was orphaned sometime before the 1860 census. His death certificate lists his parents as Jesse Hiram COLEMAN and Margaret KELLY born about 1831 both in Maryland.

Being orphaned at such a young age, he didn't remember much about his family, but was thought to have 3 brothers and a sister. Any help running these down would be appreciated.

On the 1850 Allegany Co. census he and his parents were living in the household of Jeremiah and Liza Ann COLEMAN born about 1805 and 1796. Jeremiah was born in PA and is shown on the 1830 census as living in Cumberland, but is not shown on the 1840 census, but is shown again on the 1850 census. Did they just miss him?

Does anyone have information on this family or other COLEMANs or KELLYs living in Cumberland at this time? Or does anyone have a cemetery inventory of this area that deaths and dates could be found?

Would like to correspond with anyone with information about COLEMANs or KELLYs.

Are there any ancestors of the people that gave information on death certificates for the following TWIGGs:

Preston TWIGG gave information on his father, Albert Twigg's death certificate.

Albert died 12/30/1920 buried in Brinkman-Rine Cemetery, Green Ridge State Forest, Allegany Co., MD

Charles W. TWIGG of Little Orleans, MD gave information on his mother, Sarah A. TWIGG, Albert's wife.

Sarah died 2/26/1926. Place of death: Green Ridge, MD.

Mahulda Twigg ELINE, daughter of Saley (Sala) Twigg gave information for Saley's death certificate. Mahulda lived at 4 Dilley Alley ?? Saley is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. He died in the Allegany Home in Cumberland, MD on 4/6/1915.

Mahulda married Wm. Franklin ELINE. She died 10/17/1930 and is also buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Cumberland with her husband who died 7/19/1928.

Emily was Saley's (Sala's) wife. She was another TWIGG that married a TWIGG. She was the youngest daughter of Harrison and Jane TWIGG. Emily died 1/12/1903 at the age of 55. Saley and Emily are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Perhaps the living relatives of the people I have mentioned can give me some insight on my great-great grandparents because they would be theirs as well..

I would like to connect to descendants of Hineman and Aurelia ?? HARE. They were my great-great-grandparents. They are buried in the Horn(e) Cemetery in Magnolia, WV. The Rose Hill Cemetery Book has descendants of theirs listed so I am hoping there are still Hares in the Cumberland area.

Hineman was born June 1829 and died 1910. Hineman is not listed in the Morgan Co., Census-1850. The 1860 Morg. Co. Census states Hineman was born in PA and the 1870 Morg. Co. Census states he was born in VA. The first actual documentation I have of Hineman is his marriage to Lucinda KERNS, daughter of Henry and Mary KERNS, on July 23, 1851 in Morgan Co. WV. Lucinda must have died by 1860 because Hineman and two sons, John W. age 8 and Thomas age 3 are living in household #59 with Wm. Jasper FLORA, age 28 (Railroad Worker) and Mary Flora, age 52, probably Jasper's mother.

The 1870 Morg. Co. Census have Hineman and Aurelia living in household #44. Hineman's age is 40, Aurelia's age is 20, John W. is 18, Thomas is 12 and their first born together Florence is 4. Florence is my great-grandmother that married Edward Sharon. A note of interest: Charles Kerns, brother to Hineman's first wife Lucinda, is living next door. I cannot find a marriage license for Hineman and Aurelia in the Morgan Co. records. Is there anyone researching the Hares that might be able to help me? I have some pictures of Floras and think that perhaps Aurelia was a Flora - but I am not sure.

If you have any books (other than the ones I have not showing a listing) on the C & O Canal and the lock tenders of the various locks, could you please check to see if Harrison TWIGG was a lock tender at lock 60? He is listed in the 1870 Allegany Co. Census as lock tender. Twigg Hollow is located around Lock 60. His son, Albert is also listed in the 1870 census as a lock tender but not living in the same household. Harrison's son, Moses is listed in the 1870 and 1880 Allegany Co. Census as lock tender.

They were not lock tenders at the Twigg Lock #69. I believe they were between locks 58 and 60 in the Twigg Hollow/Twigg Stream area of Green Ridge near the Mertens Avenue and Old Old Town Rd., as referred to in one of the C & O Canal books. The books I have purchased hoping to find my Twigg line, do not have these Twiggs listed.

If you have something that would give me a lock # for any of the above mentioned, I would really be grateful. Thank you.

They had dtrs Lizzie and Annie. Annie md a YOST and moved to Belleair Ohio. Lizzie md a Mr. ALLEN and lived and died at Eckhart Mines, Md. I believe Elizabeth was born in Sep 1882 and Annie in 1880. Family stories say mother Mary Elizabeth died after childbirth of Elizabeth, but I don't know that that is true. I do know that in Henry's Will of 1913 he mentions something like $5 to dtrs Annie and Lizzie, but no mention of his other children, etc. I've often wondered if there was a divorce and maybe that is why Annie went to Ohio. I am at a standstill with this because I cannot find Henry's or Elizabeth's burial site even though Henry originally bought plots at St. Patrick's in Cumberland, but church has no record if he was interned there. And I cannot get a death cert on Henry.....though I obtained a Will. Mary Elizabeth and Henry were my hubby's great grandparents. Thanks for any info.

I am looking for some primary source information that confirms that Henry T. BEALL was the son of Isaac BEALL of Allegany (now Garrett) Co. Henry was born in 1824, the year after his grandfather, Thomas of Samuel, willed his grandchildren his property. He and his younger sister Marie are consequently not mentioned. I couldn't find a will for Isaac, his father, who died in 1850. The probate records had 3 entries in which Isaac was named judge to the Orphans' Court, in addition to an administration of his estate ...which Henry T was one of the two administrators. But the latter, did not indicate the relationship.

The 1900 census indicated he was born in WV and yet from land records, I know the family was around Allegany Co. in the mid 1800's. In the index, I see Henry (of Isaac) bought land from Henry B. Bruce (Deed book 2, p.379). Would that deed state more specifically that Henry was the son of Isaac?

I found Henry living with an unrelated family in Allegany Co. in 1850 but have been unable to locate him again before 1879 when he moved to Nebraska. The only exceptions are again land records (Book24, p. 445 and Book 31, p.191). However his two sons indicate they were born in Emmitsburg, MD and Staunton VA around that time.

Any help fleshing out Henry's story would be much appreciated....his wife's name...his whereabouts after 1850...etc.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to read through this.

Hiram TWIGG's brother married Sarah Ann HU(D)SON. I really believe these two women were sisters. Sarah also used many of the given names that appear for this HUTSON line for her children.

* * * * All children noted as having been born in MD, with their father (no mention of whereabouts, fate, etc. for this one either) having been born in MD as well.

Southampton Twp, Dwelling 39

Norman McElfresh 39 y/o white male Farmer born in MD, both parents born in MD Amanda (wife) 44 y/o white female born in MD, both parents born in MD Mary C. (daughter) 16 y/o Charles C. (son) 14 y/o Caroline (daughter) 12 y/o George A. (son) 10 y/o Zella F. (daughter) 8 y/o Ida V. (daughter) 6 y/o William F. (son) 2/12 y/o

* * * * All of Norman & Amanda's children noted as having been born in PA

(Found the above family in the 1900 census. Wife not listed, and assumed dead, with Charles C. and Ida V. still living with their father. Charles is listed as having been born in July 1871, and listed as 28 y/o at time of 1900 census. This birthdate completely blows given age in 1880 census out of the water. Off by 6 years?!?! Duhh!!! Ida's sounds right, at 25 y/o

Good Evening,
I'm looking for parents and sibs of William PORTER who owned land in Yohogany Co., VA in 1785 while living in Steubenville, Ohio. The reference to the "Porter Cemetery" near Eckhart Mines caught my eye. Are there any records of a William or David PORTER around there? David was William's son. David married Isabel SIMERAL of the SIMERAL family who ran the ferry on the Youghogieny (sp?) River in the late 1700s, early 1800s.

Have lots on the SIMERALs and the PORTERs from David and Isabel on down to the present but the PORTERs from David and William back are a brick wall.

Will be glad to exchange any information and thanks!

In Southampton township. I found a John SOMERVILLE age 60 occupation Shoemaker. I also found a ?ilman (Tilman or Gilman?) LEISURE age 35 Shoemaker. Somerville was residence visited 169 on page 154 and Leisure was residence visited 197 on page 156.

Would this be close enough to be the same town? If so would anyone know which town this might be. Does anyone know of a connection between Lucinda LEASURE and (Tilman) LEISURE?
Would a town this size be able to support 2 shoemakes or more likely would these men be working together?
Would anyone know what churches and cemeteries are in this area?

Tilman LEISURE age 35 Shoemaker
Phoeba age 39
Nancy age 18
Rachel age 15
William age 12
Jeremiah age 8
Margaret age 2

We've got some brothers, chiefly George WERTZ, Sr., born 1752 in Germany and died in Bedford Pa, who appears to have been "somewhere" in Maryland in 1778 and 1779, hanging out with Captain Cressap's troops and spending a great deal of time chasing Indians but fortunately not catching up with them.

This George WERTZ married Nancy CHRISTY and had several children, one of which I descend from (though we can't prove exactly which one).

We've also been unable to definitively tie George WERTZ, Sr, to a parent, though he is rumored to have come from Germany about 1761, and his father may be a Daniel WERTZ, who shows up in Landisburg, Perry County, in Pa, eventually...

Does any of this sound familiar?

I'm trying to locate additional information about my ggg grandfather and ggg grandmother. She is Martha MARQUISS MADDEN (1781 - 1843). She is buried in Piatt County, IL. She may have been married to a man named MCKEAN before she married Roswed (see note below) MADDEN who is my ggg grandfather. She may be the sister of William MARQUISS (1766-1829) who was from Hampshire Co., VA (now WV) and who died in Pickaway Co., OH. Martha lived in Pickaway Co., OH from about 1810 - 1839. She moved to Piatt Co., IL, with her youngest child (Cynthia Madden Croninger) and lived there about 3 years before her death. Her husband, Roswed MADDEN, died about 1818 on a trip to New Orleans. He served in the War of 1812 while living in Pickaway Co., OH. Richard MARQUISS may be William Marquiss's father. Richard MARQUISS owned property in Hampshire Co. WV and in Allegany Co., MD. The two counties are adjacent.

I found a "Rosewide" Madden listed on an 1802 Hampshire Co.,WV, tax list (1 white tithable male). This is the only possible connection that I've found for my ggg-gf that would link his family to the Hampshire Co/Allegany Co area. Roswed and Martha's oldest child, John S. MADDEN Sr., said he was born in the Old Dominion in 1805. There is a William MADDEN listed in the 1800 Allegany Co., MD, federal census. He may be Roswed's father. The Mormon CDROM Ancestral Files database lists William MADDEN as Roswed's father and a Jonathan MADDEN as Roswed's younger brother. The person who entered this information in the Mormon database is no longer living at the address given so I've not been able to determine which sources she used.

I've found many different possible spellings for n. In Pickaway Co. records he has been referred to as "Rosswood", "Rozwood", "Rawsden", "Rosswed", "Riswell", "Rarewed", "Rauzewood" and "Rowzewed". I refer to him as "Roswed" because he has a grandchild by that name buried in Piatt Co., IL.

Date posted: Thursday, April 30, 1998

In an earlier request to all NICELY researchers, I was trying to find a Richard NICELY born circa 1825-1830 married to a Rebecca. They supposedly had a daughter named Orleana, born 1853 (my great grandmother). Orleana lived to the ripe old age of 92 (died in 1945) at which time her children gave info for obit. & death certificate. They named her father as Richard NICELY - mother Rebecca NICELY.

On Tuesday of this week I traveled to Allegany Co., Md. and learned the following from the 1850 census. A Rebecca NICELY was living in Allegany Co. in District # 7 (probably Oldtown, Md.). Living in this household were the following Nicelys: Abram, born 1824; Rebecca, born 1828; Sarah, age 1, born 1849 (probably the daughter of Abram & Rebecca) Clarissa, born 1830; Jackson, born 1833; Julianna, born 1835 and Christina, born 1793 (probably the mother of all but Rebecca and Sarah). She would possibly have been the wife of Michael NICELY, Sr. Orleana, my great grandmother was not born until 1853 which explains why she is not listed. There was no Richard NICELY listed.

I also found numerous deeds which showed that a Michael NICELY, Sr was the father of Michael NICELY, Jr., Abraham, Julianna, Jackson, William, Mary and possibly Eli. I also learned from one of the deeds that Abraham NICELY was married to Rebecca.

I also learned that a Rebecca NICELY married Richard DEAN in 1857, four years after my great grandmother was born. Apparently Abraham NICELY died and Rebecca remarried. A Rebecca DEAN conveys property to Orleana (NICELY) TWIGG and her husband in 1881and from this it seems that Rebecca DEAN is the mother of Orleana. I believe that when Orleana died, her children could not recall the first name (Abraham) of their grandmother's first husband. They only knew their mother's maiden name was Nicely, and they probably remembered the name Richard since Richard DEAN outlived Abraham NICELY. They therefore gave the name of Orleana's father as Richard NICELY instead ofAbraham NICELY who fathered Orleana. Abraham would have died sometime between 1853 and 1857, the year Rebecca remarried. I hope to find a death certificate for Abraham NICELY as well as for Richard DEAN.

Does anyone have information on Michael NICELY, Sr. I have found a Michael in the 1810 and 1820 census for Botetourt Co., VA. I could not find him in Virginia in 1830. Perhaps he left for Maryland at that time. By 1840 I find a Michael NICELY living in Bath, VA. Does anyone know who his parents were and whether this could be the same Michael NICELY, Sr. whose property called "Yankee Hall" was being deeded over to his children between 1850 and 1860?

Does anyone have any information on any of these Nicelys? I would appreciate any help you can give me.

Phineas REED or REID lived in Allegany Co., MD , and died there in 1817. He first appeared in the 1810 census with 3 Males and 5 Females. He bought land in Cumberland in 1816, on Mechanic Street. People associated with him were John Scott, who was named in the land deed as witness, and as a payee in Phineas REED's administration of estate.

I would like to have the will or estate of Phineas. The only record I have found is of his administration. A newspaper announcement of the marriage of his daughter Eliza, to George Ogden in 1819 in Fayette Co., PA names her father as "the late Maj. Phineas REED of Cumberland, MD." Researching a Mary POWELL, born circa 1740,daughter of Thomas POWELL and Sarah. She married Thomas Mac-kelfish, Jr. circa 1770. They came from Frederick Co., Md. where they lived around 1776; moved to Allegany Co. and lived there around 1805.

They had the following children:

Thomas MCELFISH, III, born circa 1771. Died in All. Co., Md. He married Drusilla
JOHNSON, 27 Oct 1808.
David MCELFISH
John MCELFISH
Joseph MCELFISH who moved to Ohio.

Thomas and son, David, operated a gun powder mill anda game chicken farm in Flintstone.

My question is this: Does anyone know of this particular Thomas MCELFISH, Jr. & Mary POWELL having a daughter named Susannah. It has been said in our family line that the parents of Susannah MCELFISH (my g.g.g. grandmother) were Thomas MCELFISH married to Susannah CHENEY, dau. of Richard & Mary CHENEY. But this couple was born much too early to be our Susannah's parents. I believe instead that our Susannah was the granddaughter of this couple, the child of Thomas MCELFISH, Jr. & Mary POWELL. But we have no evidence of their having a dau. named Susannah.

CAN ANY POWELL OR MCELFISH RESEARCHERS HELP?

Could the person doing the lookups on Allegany County marriages look for any WADE or HALFIN marriages? My great-great grand parents were Henry J. WADE and Mary HALFIN. Henry was supposedly born in 1825, but I don't know where and I don't know when or where he died. I don't know anything about his parents. He married Mary HALFIN in 1852. Mary was from Frostburg and lived there her entire life (1834-1925). Mary's parents were Sarah and Michael HALFIN, also from Frostburg.

I've reached a roadblock trying to find out more about Henry J. WADE. He and Mary had 11 children. One of his sons, Charles (1855-1904), is my great grandfather. Charles was a grocery store owner (corner of Union and Broadway) and he was mayor of Frostburg in 1893. Mary's obit describes Henry as a pioneer merchant in Frostburg. I found a listing for a Henry J. WADE who was the first City Clerk for Frostburg from 1870-1874. I'm guessing that might be the same person. Any help that would lead me to more information about Henry's past would be appreciated.

LONACONING, Jan 13 - The funeral of James Toll, aged 82 years of age, who died Friday morning from asthma at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John RETALLICK, Midland, took place today from his late home at 2 o'clock. Interment was made in Allegany Cemetery with Rev. U. S. Wright, Pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church, this place, officiating. The deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joseph JENKINS, Gilmore and Mrs John RETALLICK, Midland.

Would anyone have any information on the cemetery, i.e., is it still there?, and also the church, i.e., is it still there? I would be interested in finding out how to write/call these places for more information. Also, the names of the two daughters, JENKINS and RETALLICK,...... anyone related? Next is Joseph WIGFIELD, aged 40 with another male aged 4, and wife Elizabeth aged 28, and 3 other females aged 6, 3, and 1.

Lastly, Thomas WIGFIELD, aged 33, with 3 other males aged 20, 13, and 2, and wife radie aged 34, and 1 other female aged 73.

Mathew appears listed as an overseer of roads for the lower part of New Scotland in 1776 and 1777.

I've found WIGFIELD women marrying 3 times in the county, Jane marrying Nath'l HORNER on 26 April 1764; Rachel marrying John MARSHALL on 27 Dec 1787 and Ann marrying Eleazor STANDAGE on 23 Dec 1783.

A distant cousin saw one of my many queries. The family has a family Bible that lists a name of Robb or Robt. LOVE, born in Ireland, that served for 7 years in the Revolution. That's the same length of time I have listed from an old letter. However, the Bible also says he was known as G.F. LOVE (Grandfather Love??)

In the PA Archives Series 5, I found a reference to a Sgt. Rob. LOVE who was in the Bedford militia under Capt. Thomas FERGUSON. The "G" listing was Gabriel LOVE.

Also, found a reference to Henry and Robert LOVE, and a Jacob LESHER who were Contintental Troops in the Artillery. Henry was a gunner who lost his left leg in the Battle of Yorktown. Jacob and Robert were listed as "Matross". What's a matross??

Anyone out there have any data on Henry or Robert LOVE? Or Gabriel? I have checked the Abstracts for Rev. War Pensioners. There is no Robert (or G.F.) LOVE who was born in Ireland; they were born in the South. Any ideas? Thanks,

Date posted: Tuesday, June 16, 1998

I am Ed DANISON of Gahanna, OH, born in Perry County in 1939. I have been researching my line for about 10 years. My main gap in the line is uncovering the links between certain males in the Flinstone locale during the period 1790 - 1810. If anyone can provide clues to unlock this mystery, I would be greatly indebted.

In the 1800 census, Allegany County, there were four males all spelling their names: DANNISON. Samuel appeared to be was greater than 45 years old at the time. He resided there until his death circa 1824. Three more DANNISON's were on the same census as heads of households, all listed about the same age range (26 - 45) moved to Perry County, Ohio about 1812 - 1817. They were Jarret, John, and Fred.

Based on that census alone, Jarret had the largest brood - four sons under 10, one son 10 - 16, and one male 26 - 45 (most likely himself). In that same family were one daughter less than 10, one 10 - 16, one 16 - 25, and one lady 26 - 45 (most like his wife Martha).

Jarret is not on the 1810 census in Allegany. He is on the 1820 census of Perry County, Ohio, and owned 40 acres near Glassrock, Oh. A deed indicates he sold that property to Jeremiah WILSON Jr in 1838.

From CHAPTER XXVI, History of Perry County (Ohio) compiled in 1889, page 195: " Hopewell township was originally organized as a political unit in 1810. The following named persons were residents of the township as early as 1816 or 1817. John Jonas...Thomas Kendal, Abisha DANISON (my gg grandfather), Jared DANISON, Wm DANISON...Asa Wilson, Lewis Wilson , Isaac Wilson, James Wilson..."

In the biographies of the same history, Jarret's grandson, Hiram reported the following brief history of his grandfather and sire: "DANISON, Hiram, born in 1829, a farmer, Glenford post office, (Hopewell township), OH is a son of the late venerable James DANISON, who came to Hopewell township from Maryland in 1812, when his father Jared DANISON, settled on section fifteen. The sons of this old pioneer (Jared) were William, Jared, Asa, Elisha, and James, the father of Hiram DANISON. The daughters were Elizabeth (Betsey), wife of John WARD, and a Mrs Petty."

Can anyone assist me in understanding the relationship, if any of Jarret DANNISON to Samuel? Is he a son, or nephew? Samuel's will does not mention his brothers, if any, or Jarrett, Fred, or John.

Thank you in advance. I have information on WILSONs in Perry County Ohio and some information on the WARD family, both formerly of Allegany County Maryland.

I am looking for information on a Deborah LEATHERWOOD. I assume LEATHERWOOD was her married name. She shows in the 1850 census of Cumberland Md as head of household with a daughter Mary Ann age 5 years. Mary Anne was born June 14 1846. Deborah gives her age in the 1850 census as 25 so she may have been born in 1825. Would like to find a marriage of a LEATHERWOOD to Deborah. Mary Ann married Samuel WICKARD in 1869 but her name at that time was Mary Ann GILMORE. Have not been able to find any information on Mary Ann's marriage to a GILMORE. It would have been in the early 1860s. Both Mary Ann and Deborah died in the 1880s, and lived in Cumberland Md all their lives.

They were members of the Centre St Methodist Church in Cumberland. When I went there they told us that the burial ground next to the church were Mary Ann and Deborah were buried had been paved over for a parking lot! Thats hard to believe isn't it. Would appreciate any information anyone might have on Mary Ann, Deborah, or the parking lot that use to be a cemetery.

Dominant names include John, Thomas, and Joseph. Also, Henry, Christian, and Jacob. I already have the book on descendents of Abraham by Thelma Leasure Marshall. At this point I would like to hear from anyone researching
(a.) John LEZER who lived in St. Mary's County in the early to mid 1700's.

(c.) Abraham who came from Switzerland ca. 1754.

My particular group of Lazier's seem to have travelled across Maryland in the company of the MELLOTS, PERRINS, DICKENS, GORDONS, LOVEs and others. Some of them lived in Conococheague prior to moving toward Flintstone, MD and across the border into Bedford County, PA. They settled in Bean's Cove. I'm trying to get some info on Robert ROSS ,minister, who served the Flints. Circ.:Mt.Pleas. l868-69. The church was listed as Meth. Epis. S. I found this info in Ministers of Md. Churches l634-l990. The ref. was History of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. I think the S is Southern Methodist .
Does anyone know if there is a Methodist Church in Flintstone at present time and on what charge? The only Mt. Pleasant I know is in Frederick Co. He married my husband's grandparents in Westernport and I think he was related. Does anyone know if Mt. Pleasant has Methodist church and on what charge? Thanks

Joseph ZWING/ZWENG is said to have been murdered (after Sept 1882) at a canal in Cumberland, MD. Can anyone tell me how to go about finding info on this?

Joseph was born c 1839 and was listed on the 1880 census for Cumberland along with his wife Margaret (nee) SMITH and their 7 children. They had moved to Cumberland from Martinsburg, WVA by 1867. He was from Germany and was naturalized in Allegany Co in 1874.

In Sept 1882, Joseph filed a suit against George HAMMERSMITH regarding a mortgage. Could that have been the cause of the murder? I would really appreciate any assistance or suggestions on finding info on Joseph (or his family -- only son was George ZWING).

Does anyone know of ZWING/ZWENGS in Cumberland now, or in the past?

My grandfather was John Ellsworth SUTER, b. 10/24/1870, possibly in Piedmont, W.Va., but more than likely in Cumberland.

John had a twin sister, Emma m. (?) JAMMER and lived in Cumberland until she died. Emma had a son Suter JAMMER, who died young in N. Y. and a dau. Mary Ivalou JAMMER WHITE who lived in the family home on (?)Columbia St. until she died 12/17/1990.

John and Emma's parents were Jacob Amer SUTER, b. 4/9/1843 and Mary Isabel WALKER, b. 9/17/1847. They are both buried in Westernport.

Jacob's parents were Peter SUTER, b. 7/17/1806 m. Amelia RENNER, b. 1/17/1807. Both are supposed to be buried in Cumberland and must have lived there.

Peter's father was Peter also and was supposedly b. 4/4/1776 in Taneytown, Md. and buried in Rose Hill Cem., Hagerstown.

I would like to go back further but don't seem to be able to find any info. Can anyone help me? I would also like to find out about the WALKER side. We used to visit WALKERS, NEFFS, Thomas. BERRY, and William WILSON and I was told they were cousins. They all lived in Cumberland.

Norah KASEKAMP gave the information according to Ruth's death certificate.
All the death certificates I have for her siblings list her mother's maiden name as Jane TWIGG (Jane TWIGG m. Harrison TWIGG) with the exception of Ruth's. I am trying to determine the point of immigration as well as the town of origin for my great grandparents, Michael KEARNEY, married before arriving from Ireland to Ellen COSGROVE. They settled in Mount Savage, MD by mid-1850s.
They had two children, Anna (@1844) and William (@1847), in Ireland. Mary Ellen (FLOOD)(1853), John (1855), and Michael Patrick (1857) KEARNEY, were born in Mount Savage. Michael KEARNEY died in 1877 and is buried in St. Patrick's in Mount Savage. His tombstone states he was a native of County Longford, Ireland. No further information is known about either his or Ellen's origination point or parents.

Anna married William MCHUGH in Jan, 1867, had one daughter Mary Gonzaga. She was widowed by 1880, and lived in Cumberland till her death in 1924. William (per family notes, unable to prove to this point) married a Catherine Doolin and moved to Youngstown, OH by 1900 where he dies in 1916. Mary Ellen married Francis FLOOD, had four children, Joseph, Annie, and Rose all born in PA, and Ferdinand, born in OH. She too lived in Youngstown, OH and died there in 1913.

John KEARNEY married Ellen LOGSDON (per family notes, unable to prove to this point), had at least one child. His time and place of death unknown. Michael Patrick, married Catherine TANSEY in 1881 (unsubstantiated). Catherine died 1882. Michael Patrick then married Margaret MCKONE of Piedmont, WV. Michael Patrick was superintendent of fort construction. He died in MA in 1921. Margaret died in NY in 1928. Both are buried in St. Peter's cemetery in Westernport, MD.

Charles, a cooper, was born about Oct 1800, Elenor was born 25 Sep 1797. He is later found in German-speaking neighborhoods of York, while she is found in Irish sections. There is contradictory evidence about whether they could read and write, though English appears to be their native language.
