These were Margaret and Elizabeth GRAY. Efforts to find this family in the Allegany Co. deeds and census have only been confusing.
I believe I have found the will of this Peter GAR(E)Y. He seems to have died in Aug 1870 in Allegany Co. He has 6 children mentioned in the will so probably was married after the death of Mary RIZER. Listed in the will are: Elizabeth b. 1816 d. 1871? Married to Daniel ASH and then to Henry MITCHELL. Julia b. ??? married Harry C. MARKS and lived in Somerset Co., Penn in 1870 Mary A. b.??? married John SHILLING and lived in Allegany Co, Md. in 1870 John (no definite info found) Joseph (no definite info found) If I have errors in the above, I would appreciate corrections.

Joseph and Elizabeth FISHER RIZER seem to have remained in Allegany County for about a decade. Then they moved to Tippecanoe Co, Indiana. A decade after the move tragedy struck the family. Joseph Rizer died about July 1843 and his wife six months later probably in Jan 1844. Five or six children were left orphaned.

I believe that some of the FISHER family may have also moved to Tippecanoe, but have not pieced together the relationships. As I am preparing the RIZER Family book, I would appreciate hearing from anyone with data on this family.

Zachariah "Zack" JOHNSON was the owner of a dry goods store in downtown Cumberland, Allegany County, MD in the1850s thru the 1890s. Zack was born in Frederick County, Maryland, and spent over 35 years there. Zack married in 1852 and established a home near what is now the Catholic monastery. Zack had a Summer home some five miles downstream just off the Potomac River.
Zack was a friend of Hopewell HEBB and his wife who were both native of Cumberland. Zack first met Hopwell when Hopewell was a student in a Frederick, MD, college. Zack was also a friend of Richard D. JOHNSON, but was not related to him, altho both were raised in Frederick County.

Zack was known to help young men get started in business. Zack and his wife were strong church -goers and were involved in its affairs. Zack died in the 1904 at age 94. Both he and his wife are buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, a son, a daughter, a sister, Mrs. Mary (JOHNSON) ZIMMERMAN of Frederick County, MD. Question: Is there anyone out there in cyberspace who knows who the names of Zacks parents? Clue: His mother is not the mother of his declared sister.

We've heard that it's possible they may have been buried near the Clarysville Inn, and when the Old National Pike was replaced by US40, their gravesites may have been paved over. I have been looking for the parents of my great grandfather James O. RILEY, 1858-1948, who lived near Friendsville, MD for over three years. All thatis known is that in a family Bible, his parents were listed as Pady RILEY married to Jane WHORLEY/WOODY.
I finally found an obit in the 1902 Cumberland Times excerpts for a James/John (not sure of first name it said) Riley, one of the oldest trainmen of the area. He died in February 1902 at the age of 70 at the home of a son Harry. He had six grown children, but didn't list their names. He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. I called Rose Hill Cemetery and was told that a Jane, his wife's name, was not buried in his plot but that a Mary Riley who died at age 49 in 1915 was buried there as well as her stillborn infant in 1907. Also, there was a William Riley, Lottie Fisher, John P. Fisher, Carl Thomas Stevens buried in 1953 and William Stevens buried in 1956 were located in his plot. Does anyone know of these persons and their connection to James Riley?

I am trying to identify the father of Job MATTHEWS (MATHIAS). Job was born between 1768 and 1778. His mother's given name was Susanna who apparently married 3 times. Her first marriage was probably to Job's father, the second to an ANDERSON, and the last to a Thomas COOLEY in Nelson Co., Ky in 1793. Job and his mother moved to Nelson Co., Ky abt 1790 from the Allegany Co. area. Job married Priscilla DRAKE on 31 Dec. 1793. He later moved to Muhlenberg Co. Ky and finally to Warrick Co., IN where he died 27 April 1852.

Elizabeth FISHER married Joseph RIZER 31 May 1827 in Allegany Co., Maryland. Do any FISHER researchers have any information on her parents and siblings?
Joseph and Elizabeth FISHER RIZER seem to have remained in Allegany County for about a decade. Then they moved to Tippecanoe Co, Indiana. A decade after the move tragedy struck the family. Joseph Rizer died about July 1843 and his wife six months later probably in Jan 1844. Five or six children were left orphaned.

I believe that some of the FISHER family may have also moved to Tippecanoe, but have not pieced together the relationships. As I am preparing the RIZER Family book, I would appreciate hearing from anyone with data on this family.

Savage to Lonaconing or elsewhere. Regardless, we have no record of their deaths or burials. We've heard that it's possible they may have been buried near the Clarysville Inn, and when the Old National Pike was replaced by US40, their gravesites may have been paved over. Has anyone heard of such an event?

In the obit of Mary Jane KEARNEY from the Piedmont Herald it is stated that she was survived by her sister, Mrs James HOSE (Anna M. GILLEN HOSE) and a brother, Larry GILLEN. This suggests that Bridget was first married to a Gillen and had two children in the 1850's. Seeking help with these GILLEN origins. The family lived in Westernport and were active in St. Peter's church. (Anna M. GILLEN, however, was born in New York).

My great-grandfather, Patrick CREEGAN, (1832-1890) as far as information I have so far, lived only in Allegany Co. from 1852 to 1890. Yet his civil war papers indicate he enlisted in 1861 at Webster, PA. Where did most Allegany Co. men enlist? I cannot figure out why he went to PA. to enlist and not in Allegany Co.

I would like to hear from any researcher who has an interest in any of these Stickley/Johnson related surnames. Is there a researcher who has knowledge about how to get genealogical data from the SS. Peter & Paul's R.C. Church archives? Is there anyone with knowledge about the "Poor House" maintained by Allegany County on Valley Road a 100 or more years ago? Does any one have knowledge about the "Canned Heat Gang" who maintained shacks on the towpath between Thomas Street (in Cumberland) and the Potomac River? Does anyone have knowledge about the "railroad bulls" who worked out of the Cumberland office.
