Eldor and Hilda Bohrer

Eldor Bohrer was born in Mannhaven in 1918 to Herbert and Ida (Sailer) Bohrer. His wife, Hilda, was born on the homestead north of Krem in 1917 to August and Katherina (Breitling) Isaak.

They had five children: Kathleen (Brobst), born in 1941 in Hazen; Herbert, born in 1943 in Bismarck; Nancy (Lindsey), born in 1948 in Bismarck; Paul, born in 1950 in Valley City; and Randy, born in 1956 in Valley City, also.

Hilda comments: “German was spoken in our parents’ home. They also taught our children enough, so they can still understand it but won’t speak it. I attended school in Krem, and then a couple of years in California school until our father died.”

“Eldor Bohrer was the first mayor of Pick City in 1948. Eldor and I were the first ones to move out of  the Garrison Dam area. They took all our land. We moved to Valley City where we bought a dairy farm. A few years later Interstate 94 came through and went right through the middle of our yard. We were displaced for the second time. Eldor said, ‘That is enough. I guess we are not suppose to have that.’ So he worked for other ranchers.”
