Walter Isaak was born in rural Hazen to David and Rose (Guenthner) in 1925. He attended country school, but because he couldn’t talk English, he found it quite difficult.
Hulda was born in rural Hazen to Philip and Emma (Scheid) Morast in 1927. Hulda also attended a county school as well as helped with the many chores on the farm; milked cows by hand, worked out in the field, husked corn by hand, drove the header box, shocked bundles, and helped thresh the grain.
Walter and Hulda were married in 1948 at Kronthal Church northwest of Beulah. They moved to Stanton where Walter was in business with his brother-in-law, Ruben Unterseher. They had the Mobil gas business, and Hulda worked at the Super Value Store.
Walter sold his business in 1949 and worked for the county road department after moving to Hazen.
They moved to his Dad’s farm 23 miles northeast of Hazen and started raising beef cattle, hogs, chickens, wheat, oats, barley, and corn as well as milking cows.
In 1983 they built a new house and moved onto his grandfather’s (Adam Guenthner) homestead south of their farm and two miles west of Pick City. They kept on farming with his son, Kevin, who, with his wife, live on the farm.
The family are all great hunters. They go deer hunting every year, do their own butchering and make their own sausage. Walter also goes elk and moose hunting.
The won the District Conservation Achievement award for their farm in 1978.
They belong to Trinity Lutheran Church, 20 miles north of Hazen. There Hulda is a member of the LWML ladies’ group, and taught Sunday School. Walter held many positions in the church as well as served on the Mercer County ASC office for 30 years and on the Underwood Farmers Elevator Board for seven years.
Walter’s father died in 1960; his mother in 1977. Hulda’s mother died in 1983.
