FIVE KILLED IN TWO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Five people were killed Monday in a two-vehicle head-on collision approximately five miles north of the Crossroads on Highway 200. There were no survivors.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 p.m. MDT as heavy rains continued over the area.

Capt. Don Glarum of the North Dakota Highway Patrol identified the victims as Daniel Klein, 18, rural Hazen, Irene Adolf, 70, Ervin Adolf, 77, Bernice Adolf, 70, and Irene Brenno, 73, all of Hazen.

Glarum said Klein was the driver and the lone occupant in his vehicle and the other vehicle was driven by Bernice Adolf.

The passengers in the Adolf vehicle were returning from a funeral at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and it’s likely that Klein, the high school senior, was returning home from school.

Glarum said the accident is still under investigation and the only thing that is know is that one of the vehicles crossed the center line.

“We have no reason why at this point. We’re still early on in the investigation,” Glarum said.

Emergency crews from a number of agencies in the county responded to the scene and Highway 200 was closed to traffic for about three hours.

The site of the accident was a low spot between two hills and the road was wet from heavy rain.

Glarum said no one was ejected from either vehicle and both drivers were wearing seat belts. He also said to his knowledge, there were no witnesses to the accident.

~Note: The Adolf car with its passengers had just left the funeral and burial of their relative & friend, Mrs. Walter (Lorina) Ziemann, which took place at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church north of Hazen on Monday, May 10, 1999.
