Hertha Burow

Hertha Burow 89, of Mapleton, Formerly of Anthon and rural Battle Creek, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, October 16, 2007, at a Sioux City hospital with her children by her side, following a severe stroke. Services were held on Friday, October 19, 2007, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Burial: St. Paul Cemetery. Hertha Ruth, the first daughter of eleven children was born December 16, 1917 to Rudolf and Rebecca (Knecht) Sailer near Zap, North Dakota. After graduating from High School she continued her education and received her teaching certification from Dickson College. Hertha's first teaching position brought her to a rural school located on the corner of the Frank Burow farm. Shortly after her arrival in the summer of 1941, a neighbor suggested to Albert Burow that he meet the new schoolmarm. Overshadowed by the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the uncertainty of WWII, Albert and Hertha were married December 21, 1941 after a 3 month courtship. They spent their first weeks of marriage traveling through a blizzard to meet the relatives. Hertha soon retired from teaching and became a faithful farmer's wife and loving mother of the couple's two children: Betty Jean and Gaylen Albert. the couple were active members of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa. Hertha's hobbies and interests included sewing, quilting, gardening, baking, reading the Bible, and singing Christian Hymns. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Irene, Erwin, Reynold and Helen Sailer, and her husband Albert of 65 years. she is survived and loving remembered by her daughter Betty and husband Bill Ashley of Mapleton, Iowa and her son Pastor Gaylen Burow and his wife Linda of Bonner Springs, Kansas; siblings Albert (Oat) Sailer of Andover, Minnesota, Ardella Herrmann of Beulah, North Dakota, Ruby Tesky of Hazen, North Dakota, Richard Sailer of Sioux City, Iowa, Elmer (Linda) Sailer of Beulah, North Dakota, and Eugene (Eldora) Sailer of Zap, North Dakota. Hertha was a loving grandmother to Steven Ashley of Hinton, Iowa, Shauna (Ashley) and husband Tim Hugan of Mt. Airy, Maryland, Eliza Chapman of Nashua, New Hampshire, Emilee Burow of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Evan Burow of Bonner Springs, Kansas. Hertha also has 2 great grandchildren; Jessica and Bryan Hugan of Maryland. Her kind spirit, strong faith, devotional life and daily prayer will remain a loving memory to her family and friends.
