Pioneer Dies At Beulah Nursing Home

Mercer County Pioneer, Sam Miller Sr. age 93 years, of Hazen, died at the Beulah Nursing Home in Beulah Friday evening, September 11.

He was born February 10, 1877, in South Russia to Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Miller.

He came to the United States with his parents in 1886.  They settled first at Hebron and a short time later moved to Krem, north of Hazen.

He grew up there and later homesteaded north of Hazen.

He married Maria Schuh on July 5, 1903, near Hazen.  She died in 1954.

He is survived by three sons; Reinhold, Oscar and Walter, all of Hazen.  Seven daughters; (Pauline) Mrs. Christ Knoell, (Hulda) Mrs. Albert Oster, (Lydia) Mrs. Herbert Wolf, all of Hazen; (Elsie) Mrs. Lawrence Urness, Beulah; (Martha) Mrs. Henry Heath of Fargo; (Regina) Mrs. Albert Knoell, Hazen; (Frieda) Mrs. Cecil Berg, Stanton; 40 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.

One son, two brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

The Millers farmed north of Hazen until 1944, when they moved into Hazen.

After his wife’s death in 1954, he made his home with his children until March 1969, when he entered the Beulah Nursing Home.

He was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Hazen.  Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 16 at 2pm at the Peace Lutheran Church in Hazen with Rev. Oliver Dewald officiating.  Interment was held at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Hazen.
