Erna Sailer
(March 4, 1922 – November 22, 2015)

Erna Sailer, 93, of Hazen, ND passed away Sunday, November 22, 2015 at Knife River Care Center, Beulah, surrounded by family members and under the care of hospice. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST on Saturday, November 28, 2015 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, rural Hazen, with Pastor Bill Wagner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday at Barbot Funeral Home, Hazen. Erna Katherina (Wittmayer) Sailer was born on March 4, 1922 to Andrew and Lydia (Sailer) Wittmayer on the family farm north of Krem, ND. She grew up there and attended local rural school and Hazen High School. Erna married Albert Sailer on March 25, 1940. The farmed northwest of Stanton, ND until moving to Hazen in 1996. Albert passed away in 2000 and Erna moved to the Knife River Care Center in December 2013. Erna was not one to sit around or relax. She was an avid quilter for herself and her family. She made many quilts for people to give as baby shower gifts. Erna and Albert loved to dance and visit with neighbors. She enjoyed playing bingo and never missed a chance to go. On the farm, Erna did everything. Erna and Albert milked cows, raised pigs, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. The milk house always had to be perfectly white. She hauled thousands of bales and raised thousands of chickens. Her yard had to be clean with the house kept bright white and the other buildings a bright red. In her home she always wanted to be up to date. Erna helped Albert remodel every room in the house and then added on a new living room. Every year, she canned fruits, vegetables and meats. Erna loved to spend time outside picking buffalo berries, choke cherries, juneberries and apples. She enjoyed picking fruit because she said when she grew up, she and one of her sisters were always down in the draws by the Missouri River picking cherries and berries. She also enjoyed growing trees because of her childhood memories of the large cottonwoods. Erna’s grandchildren loved to be around her, especially in the summer. One of her grandchildren, Coleen, called her mother, Janice to take her home, but they didn’t make it home because Coleen wanted to return to grandma’s house. Erna leaves behind one daughter, Janice Miller of Austin, TX; four sons, Clyde (Janell) Sailer of Williston, ND, Dellas Sailer and Thomas Sailer, both of Stanton, and Steven Sailer of Washburn, ND; eight grandchildren, Jeff (Anita) Miller, Coleen (Pete) Regan, Patricia Miller, Michael (Liz) Sailer, Matthew Sailer, Christopher Sailer, Andrew Sailer and Sara Sailer; six great-grandchildren, Sean Regan, Grace Regan, Owen Sailer, Amanda Sailer, Jake Miller and Madi Miller; two great-great-grandchildren, Tiahna and Amiyah Sailer; five sisters-in-law, Patsy Sailer, Deloris Sailer, Helen Ziemann, Marie Wittmayer and Betty Sailer; and one brother-in-law, Bennie Sailer. Erna was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Sailer; parents, Andrew and Lydia Wittmayer; daughter-in-law, Carol Sailer; seven brothers, Richard (Lydia) Wittmayer, Reinhold (Florence) Wittmayer, Cornelius Wittmayer, Arthur Wittmayer, Rudolf Wittmayer, Albert (Helen) Wittmayer and Emil Wittmayer; four sisters, Hulda (Emil) Rathjen, Frieda (Art) Lukins, Emma (Leo) Twining and Selma (John) Ehli. Erna was the last member of her generation in the Wittmayer family. Erna’s family would like to thank Knife River Care Center for the care they gave Erna during her time there as well as SMC Hospice for their care during Erna’s last hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Knife River Care Center or SMC Hospice. Arrangements conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
