Ivan was born on March 2, 1933 in Stanton to John and Frieda (Zeiszler) Stiefel. He was baptized on April 8, 1933 and later confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Stanton. Ivan attended school in Stanton. Following high school, Ivan entered the U.S. Army on June 11, 1953. He was stationed at Camp Chaffee, AR before being sent to Korea. He served 16 months in the 159th Field Artillery and received an honorable discharge on May 2, 1955 at Fort Lewis, WA. For his time serving his country, Ivan was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Ivan also spent eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve and achieved the rank of Corporal.

Ivan married Marchie Reinhardt at Concordia Lutheran Church, Beulah on August 11, 1961. The couple had three sons, Jeffrey John, David Ivan and Gregory Paul. Ivan took several career paths throughout his life. He began working as a Euclid operator during construction of the Garrison Dam and also spent time working on the Oahe Dam at Pierre, SD. Following his days in construction, Ivan became the Deputy Sheriff of Mercer County for four years and went on to become the Sheriff for another 16 years.  This position kept him busy during the Zip to Zap weekend in 1969 and also during the North American Coal Company strike in 1975. He was also instrumental in the growth of the department, expanding from only himself, one deputy and a jailer, to four deputies, three jailers, one office manager and a new office and jail facility. He later began working for Basin Electric as their security chief and later in operations for 18 years and after his retirement, returned to his security position part-time.

Ivan was also very active in his community. He was the church treasurer, Sunday School Superintendent and served on the church property committee at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. He was an American Legion commander for many years, a lifetime member of the North Dakota Peace Officers Association, a member of the Eagles, Moose, IBEW and Mercer County Veteran’s Memorial Committee.

Ivan enjoyed helping his family with all kinds of projects and considered himself a handyman and a do-it-yourselfer. He loved to hunt and fish, especially the time spent in the boat with his sons. After retirement, Ivan enjoyed wintering in Arizona with Marchie and spent time gleaning the vegetable fields for the poor and needy, traveling and making new friends. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren at all their activities. Ivan loved to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Marchie, of Stanton; three sons, Jeff (Leanne) of Hazen and David (Jennifer) and Greg (Sarah) all of Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Amber (Bret), Alexis, Colton, Miles, Kennedy, Addison, Sofia and Emmitt; one great-granddaughter, Avari; one brother, Donald (Avis) Stiefel of Garrison; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Marvin; and two sisters, Betty and Jeanette.

In lieu of flowers, memorial are preferred to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Stanton.

Arrangements are conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
