Hildegard Wallender

1921-2014

Hildegard Wallender, 93, of Hazen, North Dakota died Friday, November 28, 2014, at Knife River Care Center, Beulah. Services will be held at 10:00 AM CST, on Thursday, December 4, 2014, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hazen with Pastor Kirk Peters officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM CST, Wednesday, at Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah.

Hildegard was born on July 17, 1921, to David and Rosalie (Guenthner) Isaak, at rural Krem, ND. She was baptized on September 25, 1921, at Luther Gemeinde Church, attended rural school and was confirmed on June 14, 1936, at Trinity Lutheran Church. She graduated from Stanton High School in 1939, and then attended Capital Commercial College in Bismarck. Hildegard married Armand Sailer on July 2, 1942, at Air Force Base Chapel at Pine Camp, New York, and the couple lived at various air bases during World War II. After the war, they lived in the Pick City area, moving to Hazen in 1952.

Hildegard worked at the Hazen Memorial Hospital and Hazen Drug Store for many years. She moved to Beulah and was married to Bill Wallender on August 3, 1974, at Concordia Lutheran Church. While living in Beulah, she worked at Ben Franklin and in the Beulah elementary school kitchen. Bill died on February 7, 1991, and Hildegard moved back to Hazen in 1994. She lived at Senior Suites at Sakakawea for a short time, moving to Knife River Care Center in December 2011. Hildegard was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and was also a member of LWML for 40 years. She was involved in the church choir, evangelism and braille.

Hildegard is survived by her children, A. David (Nancy) Sailer of LaFayette, GA, Lana Dietrich of Romeo, MI, Sarah (Bruce) Drath of Tucson, AZ, Mary Speidel of Tucson, AZ, Peggy (Loren) Wiest of Hazen, and John Sailer of Minneapolis, MN; two siblings, Armond Isaak of Beulah and Jeanette Zeller of Washington; 13 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Wallender; her parents; siblings, Lorentina Weisz, Elsie Sailer, Walter Isaak, Gertrude Ziemann, Delores Isaak, Selma Unterseher, Othmer Isaak, Elmer Isaak; one infant son; one grandson, Ryan Speidel; and two infant grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to SMC Hospice or St. Matthew Lutheran Church Braille. Arrangements conducted by Barbot Funeral Home, Beulah and Hazen.
