S. D. CRASH FATAL TO SIX
Halliday Boy, 3 Ministers Among Dead

KADOKA, S.D. (AP) – Six persons, three of them ministers, died early Wednesday when a car spun 275 feet out of control on State Highway 73 about 17 miles south of here.

The dead:
The Rev. H. F. Winkler, 38, and his wife, Goldie, 33, Sturgis, S.D.
The Rev. Fred Van Deventer, 55, Rapid City.
The Rev. Paul Becker, 27, and his wife, Gunith, 24, Sturgis.
Irvin Bunk, 18, rural Halliday, N.D., a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Bunk, and a 1954 graduate of Halliday high school.

BOTH OF THE BECKERS are former residents of Bismarck.

The two were married Nov. 21, 1947. Mrs. Becker was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Bechtold of Minot and was employed in the J. C. Penney store in Bismarck at the time of her marriage. Becker was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Becker, formerly of Bismarck. Before becoming a minister he was employed by the Copelin Motor Co. in that city.

Besides her parents, Mrs. Becker is survived by two sisters and two brothers. The sisters are Mrs. Delbert Wilkerson of Minot and Mrs. Robert Rittgers of Lawton, Okla.

The identifications were made by Jackson County Coroner, Marvin Hogan, and the state motor patrol.

The group was en route from Allen, S.D., where they attended a young peoples’ rally when their car left the highway on a slight curve.

The motor patrol said it skidded about 200 feet on the right side of the road and then veered across the highway and into a 25-foot ditch. Patrol Supt. W. J. Goetz said he had reports that the six were thrown from the auto and it rolled over them.

HOGAN SAID IT had been snowing at the time and the road may have been slippery.

The tragedy boosted the state’s traffic toll for January to 15. There were only six during the entire month a year ago and only on up to this time in 1954.
