MARTIN WOLF
April 15, 1914-Jan. 8, 1996

Martin, Wolf, 81, Terry, Mont., died Jan. 8, 1996, at the Prairie Community Nursing Home in Terry. Funeral services were held Jan. 11, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fallon with Rev. Howard Schreibeis officiating.  Interment was in the family lot in the Prairie County Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Mr. Wolf was born in Hazen on April 15, 1914, the son of Jacob and Christina Morast Wolf.  He went to school through the eighth grade in Hazen. Following he went to work for various relatives in the area. In the thirties he came to Montana and worked on various farms north of Circle and around Terry.  In 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country in the South Pacific during World War II.

On February 13, 1944, he married Gertrude Scheid in Terry. After he was discharged from the service in 1945, they had a small farm north of Circle. In 1947 he moved to Terry while working for ranchers.  In 1949 he worked for the Buffalo Rapids Project for a few years before going to work at the Farmers Union delivering gas until the mid 50’s.  At that time he went out on his own by buying the Standard Oil Gas Station, then moving up the road to Enco Gas Station a couple of years later.  In 1971, he went back to work at the Buffalo Rapids Project until he retired.  During these years he also was active in church and in the community.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, American Legion Post No. 32 and the VFW. He served in many positions and on various committees.  He also drove the Cracker Box school bus at one time, was a councilman and the Mayor of Terry. In his later years, his grandchildren were the light of his life.

Martin is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Robert Birkholz, four grandchildren, William of Miles City, Virginia and Shawn McGuire of Miles City, Patrick and Rebecca of Terry; three brothers, Johnny Wolf of Circle, Mont., Herbert Wolf of Beulah, and Theodore Wolf, of Hazen; and one sister, Ida Grosz of Hazen.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, his parents, six brothers and two sisters.
