MERCER COUNTY SCHOOL DAZE MEMORY

Joann Saved the Schoolhouse
~Written by 12 yr old, Paul Knecht

It was on the morning of March 22, 1945, when our schoolhouse, Krem No. 1, District 4, was on fire. My sister, Lillian Knecht, was the teacher then.

Early in the morning Joann Rasch, a first grader, came to school. She said the schoolhouse was so full of smoke that she couldn’t see. She ran to her Grandmother’s place, Reinholt Gutche and also Mr. Erckson was there. They came to the school and opened windows and the door. They could finally see there was a big hole in front of the stove. They sprinkled it with water. They also had to move the stove to get the fire out. When we came there they had it out already. Thanks to our first grader for saving the schoolhouse. How it started, we don’t know. But we all think the stove shot out some ashes and caught fire.
