Gurmen Schimke Sat 9 Oct 1999

My name is Gurmen S. Schimke. I was raised in Bowdon. My father's name was Solomon and my Mother's name was Leah (Hartman). I have about completed the family history on the Schimke side. However, material on the Bich family remains quite sketchy. My grandmother's name was Salme (Bich). She was married to my grandfather John Schimke. They farmed south of Heaton in the late 20's and early 30's. They moved to Washington and later California during the depression. I believe my maternal great grandfather's name was Jacob. Great grandmother's name was Justina (Knopp) and her parents were Peter Knopp and Rosia (Gross). I believe both families migrated through Ellendale from Russia. John and Salme were married there and latter farmed in the area between Kulm and Ellendale. Information on the Schimke side is quite complete from the court house in Ellendale, the State Historical Society, and from an uncle and aunt that still survive. However, I haven't been able to trace the Bich family in North Dakota. Any help you might be able to offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Gurmen gschimke@westriv.com Box 183 Hebron, ND 58638

I don't know enough to ask an intelligent question. Here is what I know. I am looking for the homestead that my grandfather proved up. I have a picture of the sod house that was taken many years later. When he was 21 in 1898 (this is my Aunt's memory) he put his goods on a RR car and went to ND where he homesteaded. My Aunt has given me the name of a town that I can't find. Maybe it isn't spelled correctly or maybe it no longer exists. It was supposed to be Peever in Wells, County. In September of 1907 he returned to Truman, MN when he married my grandmother and they farmed there. Can anyone give me a clue where he might have lived. His AKA name was Charles Edward Stahn.

I'm in search of my great great grandfather's (Lambert Schaefer) death certificate. I was lead to believe that he died in Goodhue County, Minnesota, but I never was able to find a death certificate in either Wabasha County or Goodhue. Then about a week ago, I came across him in the 1920 Harvey, Wells Co., ND census. He was living with his son, Lambert I. Schaefer, and his family. Lambert I. was in Harvey working for the railroad at the time. Lambert Sr. supposedly died May 3, 1920. Would anyone have a chance to glance for a death notice for Lambert in either a newspaper or county records? It would be much appreciated. His wife's death certificate is just as elusive, but I'm pretty sure that they were not living in North Dakota at the time of her death since she showed up in the 1905 Census in Minnesota shortly before her death. Thanks for any help. Carrie Schafer

Looking for information on the family of Mathias Prom. Mathias was the son of Heinrich and Susanna N. Prom. He was married twice, once to Maria Anna Strauss of Bellechester, MN, and second time to Susanna Meyer, with whom he moved to Harvey, North Dakota, according to family stories. Wabasha County birth records have shown that Mathias had five children with his first wife, two of whom are buried with their mother in Bellechester, MN. The other three were: John Prom (b. 11/18/1878 in MN); Maryanna Prom (b. 3/31881 in MN) married a Mr. Schmidt; and Catharina Anna Prom (b. 3/12/1887 in MN) married a Mr. Weinman. Mathias and Susanna had at least seven children: Lucy Susan Prom who married a Mr. Weinman; Clara Prom; Christine Prom; Henry Prom; Emil Prom; Laurence Prom and Cecilia Prom. In glancing through the web site for Wells County Cemetery transciption, it looks as though Mathias, Laurence, Christine, Emil and other are buried somewhere in Wells County. Does anyone know any more information about this family? Thanks for any help. Carrie

Bonny Thur 4 Jul 2002

I'm looking for any information on my grandfather, Peter Otto Kjarsgaard who immigrated through Ellis Island from Denmark in June of 1904. Our records indicate that he settled in Heaton or Sykeston. He married my grandmother, we believe, after he immigrated to the United States. Her name was Marie Kristina Sorensen. Other information we have on them as follows: Peter was born in Denmark in July 1883 or 1884. He arrived at Ellis Island June 4, 1904 aboard the Island. One address we can verify through records is Heaton North Dakota, where he apparently was a business owner. Marie was born in Denmark in 1887. They had two children in North Dakota. A daughter, Alice born May 2, 1909 and a son Ralph born July 20, 1910. They left North Dakota and moved to Canada in October of 1910. I would like to know any information I can find on what they did while in North Dakota, when they were married etc. Any help or information would be appreciated. Thank you Bonny

Charlotte Peebles Thu 18 Jul 2002

Hi, my name is Charlotte Peebles. My great grandparents married in Harvey, NDin 1907. There is no record at the court house that I could find. I emailed someone a long time ago, about researching this couple, but nothing could be found. I believe they probably met in Harvey, on their way to Homestead in Dagmar, MT. At one time I saw the decorative wall hung license, so I know that is where they married. They were from Denmark, so I am sure they were married in the Lutheran Faith, as they also practiced Lutheran Religion. Their names were Piet Moller Nielsen and Kristina Nielsen(also her maiden name). On their decorative license -her name is stated Christina Nelson. Do you know of any way to research the old church records, if there were no county records at that time? Charlotte Peebles charlotte.peebles@gte.net

My grand uncle, Olaf (John Olav) Landstad 1888-195? emigrated from Norway to his elder brother's Gus (Gustav Marius) Landstad place in Superior , WI in 1907. Gus was a laborer in Superior. In the US census for 1920, Olaf was a hired man at his cousin Sorens Estvolds farm in Fram Township, Wells county. Soren became a widow man and moved to Carlisle, Otter Tail in Minnesota. Olaf stayed behind in Heimdal, but visited Soren and other cousins in Minnesota every summer. If anybody has any information to give regarding Olaf's destiny , I would be very thankful. My husband, deceased, parents were married and lived in Fessenden Wells County North Dakota. I am doing research for my two sons on their fathers line. I know his mother's parents names and that they were born in Wisconsin. I also know the father was born in Minnesota and his exact date of birth. But what I would like to know is how would I go about getting a copy of the marriage license to see if it would show the father's parents names. They moved to Minnesota but they were both born in New YOrk. I don't know the date of the marriage. But I know the age of the oldest daughter. How expensive is it for someone to do a look up with this information.

In Spokesfield's book "The History of Wells Country and it's Pioneers" I'm told there is mention of Henry Mettis Mathis [son of E. Frank Mathis, a pioneer of Cathay, ND], his wife and 3 children drowning in a flood in California in February 1928. Does anyone know where Henry Mettis Mathis [my cousin] may have been living in California and what flood the book is referring to?? I have been unable to locate any information in California other than the failure of the San Francisquito Dam which killed a number of people. I have the feeling that the Mathises were living in the San Francisco area. But there is a note in the old Mathis Bible that Henry's father, E. Frank Mathis, died in 1920 [and it's hard to read] but I believe it states L.A.[Los Angeles?]. So perhaps, they were all in the Los Angeles, CA area which is where the San Francisquito Dam was located. Does anyone know how I'd access a list of the people who were killed in the San Francisquito Dam disaster?? Please feel free to write to me at P.O. Box 9338, Cedarpines Park, CA 92322. Many Many Thanks, Roxanne Myers Neel Jack and Roxanne Neel

CLARK - MATHIS: My maternal great-grandmother, Clarissa CLARK, married my great-grandfather, Edmond Cavalier MATHIS, on Sep. 18, 1853 in LaSalle Co., IL. They moved to the Browning, Linn Co., Missouri area before heading north to Cathay, Wells Co., ND. I believe they were in the Wells Co., ND area at least by 1883 or earlier. They had 10 children, one of whom was my maternal grandmother, Clara Irene MATHIS-SMITH. What I'm searching for is any information on Clarissa CLARK's parents and siblings. On the 1885 Dakota Territory census, Clarissa states that she was born in Ohio and that both her parents were born in New York. I would love to correspond with anyone who has any leads on this elusive lady. I have two pictures of her [one from Spokesfield's book, "The History of Wells County and its Pioneers" where she is listed as Mrs. C. R. Mathis, and one photo from a cousin]. One of Edmond & Clarissa's older sons, Edgar Ashley [E.A. Mathis] I believe was a barber in Cathay, ND. Edgar Ashley MATHIS was born in 1855. On the 1885 Dakota Census, his 3 youngest siblings are listed as still living at home. They were Emmery Franklin MATHIS, b. 1867, Orvil Grant MATHIS, b. 1869, and Homer Eugene MATHIS, b. 1871. Their father, Edmond C. MATHIS, b. April 22, 1825, is listed as a farmer; mother Clarissa CLARK, b. Nov. 29, 1831, is listed as a homemaker. I have a great deal of info on the MATHIS line going all the way back to "Great" John Mathis of Little Egg Harbor, NJ but precious little on Clarissa CLARK. Any info/leads will be greatly appreciated! Please feel free to email me direct or write me at P.O. Box 9338, Cedarpines Park, CA 92322. Thank You! Roxanne Myers Neel. arlis6771@earthlink.net

Margaret Prom- 2 husbands: John Roller and Mike Fischer? I am looking for information on Margaret Prom, (born Aug 15 1919) daughter of John Francis Prom and Lucille MaeGludt. I think she married 2 men; the first would have been John Roller, with whom she had at least 6 children: Lucy, Elizabeth, John Henry, Susan, Thomas and Peter. At some point she married a Mike Fischer, and she died as Margaret Fischer March 14, 1999 in Harvey. If anyone can provide insight into either John Roller or Mike Fischer, it would be appreciated. My mother is a Prom from the Heinrich Prom/Susanna Neuhengen line. I can be contacted at rashad44@juno.com Methuria

Hello. I am looking for information on Gustav Keil, born abt 1872 in Prussia. He and his wife Julia Grund and children Martha & John are listed on the US 1900 census as having been in North Dakota (Wells county) for 4 years. The 1891 Canadian census lists him as living with his father, Wilhelm & family. His daughter Martha is listed on the 1900 US census as having been born in Canada and the son in USA. Julia died 1910 and is buried in Harvey, ND. Gustav and son are listed in the 1911 Canadian census as lodgers but by the 1916 Canadian census, they have disappeared. Not found in the 1920 US census either. Anyone with connections to this family? Thank you. Elaine Parker Kamloops, BC
