Jay Ames was born March 13, 1888, at Meadow Grove, Nebraska. When he was six, the family and other relatives moved to Butler, Bates County, Missouri. In October of 1898 they returned to Meadow Grove. They moved to Holt County, Nebraska in 1902 where they farmed south of Mineola. Jay attended school in Holt County and later moved to Neligh, Nebraska where he was a telegrapher for the C&NW Railroad from 1907 to 1914. On November 25, 1909 he married Florence Mabel Worden, daughter of Emma Ann Ginger Worden and the late Sanford Worden. He went to work for the S F Gillman Mills in 1914 as a bookkeeper and salesman. In May of 1954, he and a co-worker purchased the remaining stock in the mill, operating as managers until the mill was sold in 1969. Jay and Florence also operated a flower shop in Neligh. Jay died on October 25, 1971. Florence was born March 12, 1892 on a farm south of Clearwater. She died October 21, 1973.
