Emil Asmussen, born May 9, 1905, to John and Agnes Asmussen, on the family farm in Sioux County, Iowa, grew to manhood there and came to Nebraska in 1928.

He was married on June 22, 1928 to Chlovena Hovelsrud, who was born on August 14, 1905 to Ole and Julia Hovelsrud at the family homestead in Boone County.

They farmed in Boone County from the time of their marriage until coming to Antelope County on March 1, 1932. They continued to farm in Antelope County until moving to Neligh in 1948 where they lived until 1960. At that time, they returned to rural life on their farm four miles north and a half mile east of Neligh. They lived there until Emil moved to Heritage Village in July 1980, due to failing health. Emil worked for Antelope County in the Rural Maintenance Department, operating a road patrol from 1948 until he retired in 1970. There are many people in the area that I'm sure recall Emil being their lifeline when he would be out in snowstorms plowing roads so folks could get food for themselves or their livestock, or for medical aid or for whatever was needed.

Chlovena also worked in the Neligh area for many years. She worked at the Sinclair Cafe from 1946 to 1952. She then spent about three years working at the Neboco Hotel before going to work at Antelope Memorial Hospital in 1956 where she worked until she retired in 1971. Although she retired she did not quit working, as she continued to do volunteer work wherever she was needed in the community. She has done work for the Red Cross, American Legion Auxiliary and Historical Society.

Emil and Chlovena had three sons and three daughters; Hilary, DeLayne, Ronald, Javon, LaRene, and Maxine. All graduated from Neligh High School. Hilary married Evelyn Velder Pittack; Javon married Claud Burrows; LaRene married Julius Pfeifer. DeLayne married Judy Velder; Maxine married Evert Komlofske and then Dan Wakely; Ronald married Bea Ferguson.
