John was born on October 10, 1855 to William Austin and Mary Ann Day at Schellsburg, Wisconsin. He was the second in a family of 11 and grew to manhood at Browntown, Wisconsin.
Sophia was the fourth of a family of thirteen born to Mason and Elizabeth Parmer. She was born October 22, 1862 at Browntown, Wisconsin. She grew up in Browntown where she worked in many homes.
In 1887, John and Sophia purchased a farm south of Oakdale in the Star area. This would be their home for over fifty years. John died on October 4, 1940 and Sophia on December 28, 1944. They are buried next to John's parents in the Oakdale Cemetery.
