Grant Bailey was born in Franklin County, Iowa, January 27, 1865, of Scottish parents. He came with his parents to Antelope County in 1873.

He helped with the building of the railroad between Norfolk and Ewing. He was a carpenter by trade. He married Laura A Stevens, born February 15, 1871, and brought her to Neligh. Their three children: Lloyd, Elsie and Ruth. Lloyd married Loa McCluskey and had one daughter, Lois. Ruth married Lloyd W Bearinger. Grant remembers seeing Texas cattle by the thousands being driven through Neligh on their way to western Nebraska and Wyoming. The cowboys who made Neligh their rendezvous would shoot at houses to show off their marksmanship. He remember Kid Wade and Doc Middleton. Grant died October 20, and Laura died November 13, both in 1946.
