In 1873, Mr. and Mrs. Lyman W. Bailey and five children left Shelfield, Iowa in three covered wagons for Nebraska. They bought 120 acres of land adjoining Neligh on the southeast. When they arrived, they lived in a sod house where the pavilion now stands in Riverside Park. It had been constructed by a Mr. Potter who left during the floods of 1873.

The children grew up in Neligh and married here: William to Phoebe Stalph; Almeda to Jim Marrad; Laura to Columbus Penn; Devila to Ella Shake and Grant to Laura A Stevens. Grant was the only one to stay his lifetime in Antelope County. He built a home near his parents and remained there for 54 years. Grant and Laura had three children; Lloyd, Elsie and Ruth. Lloyd married Loa McCluskey. Grant was a carpenter and businessman. He retired in 1944 and died on October 20, 1946. Laura died on November 13, 1946.
