Carl Oscar Bergman, son of Peter August Bergman and Kristina Jensen, was born February 18, 1879 near Edsborg Versback, Sweden.  He came to the United States with his parents in about 1889.  Upon on arrival, they traveled by train and wagon to the homestead of Alfred T. Bergman west of Elgin.  Alfred was his brother and had come to America several years earlier.

Oscar attended the “Swede School”.  His father died on May 4, 1897.  His mother returned to Sweden with Oscar’s two younger siblings.  Oscar and his sister, Hannah, chose to remain with his uncle and aunt.  Oscar worked on area farms and ranches and Hannah worked for a family in Petersburg.  She later married Charles Arp.  In 1919, Oscar purchased the family farm.

On February 11, 1921 he married Dora Elizabeth Ragland at Albion, Nebraska.  Dora was teaching school in Wheeler County.  She was the daughter of John Ragland and Ada Warn.  They were parents of two daughters, Babe, who died in infancy, and Doris Alma.  Doris graduated from Elgin High School.  She married Roy Schmidt, son of Charles J Schmidt and Louise E Lange.  They had one son, Charles Oscar.  He married Brenda Faye Pollock of Neligh.  They were parents of three children:  Korinna Dawn, Nathan Charles, and Brandon Jon.  Carl Oscar Bergman died on March 13, 1950 and Dora died on February 23, 1975.
