Newton Black, son of Abraham Black and Melinda Carmen, was born November 27, 1843 in Ross County, Ohio.  Abraham and Melinda moved their family to Linn County, Iowa, settling in Marion township in the early 1850’s.  Newton enlisted in the Civil War on July 7, 1862.  He was discharged on July 17, 1865. 

Newton married Ida Gustave Palmer on November 19, 1876.  Ida was born on April 2, 1857, daughter of George Washington Palmer and Melinda Mehitable DeWolfe.  Newton and Ida’s older children were born in Iowa.  In 1880, the family moved to Antelope County and filed on a homestead northwest of Brunswick, Nebraska.  Newton died in 1895 after having been shot three times by a neighbor.  Ida as left with seven girls and one son:  Melinda Alena, Lillie Irene, Rosa Ann, Jennie Belle, Mary Jane, Eliza Frances, Sarah Ette and Samuel Newton.  They lived in Neligh for a while and then moved to land southwest of town.  Eliza died there.  Ida homesteaded in Cherry County before moving to Arkansas.  Alena married Cyrus Muhm; Lillie married William Blesh; Rose married Tyra Stanley; Jennie married George W Buckmaster; Mary married Arthur J Buckmaster; Sarah married William Ashmore.  Samuel traveled the oil fields and died in Wyoming in 1922.
