John Jacob Bolling was born October 9, 1883 to John and Elizabeth Bolling at Schlasurg, Germany. He had a brother, Max and two sisters, Tena and Elsa. He came to the United States at the age of 17 and lived in Iowa for a short time before moving to Clearwater, Nebraska.
He married Magdelena Rittscher, daughter of Martin and Dora Rittscher on May 14, 1911. They farmed south of Clearwater. They were the parents of seven children: Clara, Walter, Arnold who married Dora Behnk, two children; Elsie married Mark King, one child, Helen married Harold Nielsen.
