He came to Antelope County in 1880 with his parents who were pioneer homesteaders near Ewing. He was one of the students in school taught by James Delzell who led his students to safety in the Blizzard of 1888 by fastening them together in a human chain and leading them to Mr. Browning's home.

On February 11, 1898 in Royal, Nebraska, Alex married Emma Brachman. She was born February 11, 1878 in Lincoln County, South Dakota, the daughter of William Brachman and Anna Kindt. The Brownings operated a bakery and meat market in Brunswick. After a few years, they moved to Orchard where Mr Browning was an undertaker with assistance from Emma.
