Josephus Frank Carnes was born July 30, 1887 to J. S. and Jennie Carnes in a sod house near New Helena, Custer County, Nebraska. When he was three years old, his parents moved to Greenwood, Cass County. Frank attended rural schools.

At the age of nineteen he moved with his parents to Antelope County wehre he farmed with his father. On December 21, 1913, Frank and Blondena Heller were united in marriage at Tilden. She was the daughter of Adolph and Dora Heller of Tilden. They moved to Plattsmouth, Cass County, on a farm. The next year they moved to Antelope County,southwest of Neligh where their son, Leslie Adolph Sigle was born March 9, 1915. They later moved to the Long Pine and Royal areas, then back east of Neligh in the New England Valley community on a farm owned by his father. On April 5, 1920, their daughter Dorothy Lucille was born.

Frank was a stockman and farmer all his life and was killed in a car accident east of Neligh, October 24, 1937. Daughter, Dorothy, died from surgery June 3, 1941 at Grand Island. Leslie died March 12, 1970 in a car accident and is buried at Grand Island.
