Samuel Clingman was born to Daniel and Elizabeth Stamm Clingman on February 21, 1822 in West Buffalo, Union County, Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Seiler on April 7, 1844 in Mifflenburg, Pennsylvania. Two years later, they moved to Long Grove, Lake County, Illinois with their four month old son, Henry, born March 2, 1846. Seven more children were born to them at Long Grove: Elizabeth, March 17, 1848, married Edward Schaffer and died December 30, 1922.: Caroline, July 30, 1850, married Jacob William Miller and died February 23, 1896; David Stamm, February 14, 1853, married Alvesta Knedler, died January 14, 1905; William Daniel, born April 12, 1856, married Evelin King, died April 18, 1940; Mary Lavina, February 20, 1858, married Walter Henry Hall, died August 16, 1938; Ida Sarah, July 13, 1867, married Robert W King, died October 4, 1888; George Samuel, born March 11, 1870, died May 9, 1946. Their first child, Catherine, died when only a few months old. The Clingmans lived in Long Grove until a heart attach forced Samuel to give up farming. On October 25, 1881, Samuel and Susannah and their youngest children, Ida and George moved to Oakdale. Mary and Walter had moved their in 1879. In 1882, son Henry, his wife, Ethelinda Barnes and children, Nellie Ann, born April 11, 1873, died January 28, 1967; James Abbot, born April 13, 1875, married Louise McDougall October 14, 1903, died October 1, 1957; Archer Dana, born January 6, 1878, married Maud Warner June 26, 1902, died August 21, 1935, followed his parents to Oakdale.

Samuel and his sons, George and Henry were the first publishers of the Oakdale Sentinel. George and Henry were also partners in Clingman Brothers-Book and Job Printers. Henry, James and Arch were all members of the Oakdale band at one time or another. Samuel died October 20, 1889 and Susannah on September 20, 1911. They are buried along with Henry, Ethelinda, George, Nellie, Ida, Arch and Maud, as well as babies of James and Louise in the Oakdale Cemetery.

There are no Clingman descendents now living Antelope County. In 1888, George Clingman began keeping an unoffical record of the temperature and precipitation in Oakdale. The record was made official in 1893. George died in 1946 and niece Nellie kept the records until 1957. Henry Clingman, as well as a printer, worked at the trades of carpenter, blacksmith and market gardner. After the death of his wife Ethelinda, January 5, 1885, he married Mrs. Elvira Stuart on September 4, 1892; she died January 26, 1900. Later he was married to Sarah German for a short time. Henry died July 10, 1907 in Oakdale.
