Katie Mary Leach was the oldest daughter of Adoniram J and Eliza Leach. She was born on October 27, 1868 in Dodge County, Nebraska. About a year later her family moved to Antelope County where her father filed for a homestead on Cedar Creek west of Oakdale. She grew up on this homestead, living there until she was 18 when the family moved to Oakdale. At the age of 12 she started her musical education, riding on horseback to Oakdale for instruction. Later she taught music and was an artist of sorts. All her married life to Clarence H. Brainard, she lived on the same place, next to her parents. She raised one daughter, Myrtice, who married Ernest Tavener in 1918. Katie and Clarence were travelers and took many automobile trips around the country.
