George Voorhies was born in Royal, Nebraska on July 13, 1914, the son of Samuel Voorhies and Elizabeth Krotcher.  He attended Orchard Public Schools and graduated in 1933.  On June 19, 1938, he married Leona Everhart, the daughter of Chauncey Everhart and Olive Meuret.  She was born in Neligh.  At the age of one, the family moved to Orchard.  Her parents bought the Orchard News.  She attend Orchard schools and graduated in 1933 and then attended Wayne State College and taught school for five years.  The family lived in Franklin, Nebraska, Elgin, and Fremont.  Their daughter, Marlene, was born in Elgin.  George worked in the Mead bomber plant and was called into the service.  He served in Japan during World War II.  After the war, he returned to Elgin where they purchased the Elgin Review and published it for 39 years.  George passed away on October 31, 1984.  Marlene graduated Elgin High in 1960 and attended Wesleyan University and the University of Nebraska.  She married Robert Cameron and they have two children.
