JOHN M. WERNING, JR, son of John Werning and Rose Meis, was born October 4, 1899 at Elgin. They lived on a farm southwest of Elgin. His life work after he left the farm was a mechanic for Contois Motor Company for a couple of years and then he started his own business. He died of a heart attack on April 28, 1950. ELIZABETH C GREGOR, daughter of Frank Gregor and Amelia Dewald, was born December 10, 1902 at Hebron, Nebraska. She moved to Elgin in 1918 and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, Falls City, Nebraska in 1921. John and Elizabeth were married January 11, 1927 in Elgin. They were parents of five children: Robert John, December 23, 1927, died in 1927 in a plane crash; Betty Jean, June 4, 1929, married Ralph Schindler, eleven children.
