Logan Township

School district No. 18 was organized in 1873.  The first school house was a “soddy,” located one mile south of Elgin in the northeast corner of the Andre Bennett homestead in Logan Township, Sec. 14.

There were generally two terms in the school year, one in the summer for two months and one in the winter for three months. The first teacher was Miss Emily Trowbridge.  In 1883 the district and population had changed and a new frame building was erected one half mile west and a little south of the present site.  It was a very good building and served as a school, church, and civic and social meeting place.  In 1888, a year after Elgin was born, the school was moved into town and located on the present school site.  This building was soon outgrown, sold and moved one block where it became part of the present Freda Davis residence.  A new two-story four room building was erected in its place.  Now a two year high school course was added.
