Walter M. Anson, Orchard, Nebraska, entered the U S Army September 25, 1942 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.  He trained at Fort Bliss, Texas.  In February 1943 he went to Camp Pickett, Virginia for more training.  On June 22, 1943, he sailed for Oran, North Africa.  He left the Oran Harbor on July 4th for Sicily and landed with the 45th Division on July 9, 1943.  His battalion participated in the Sicily, Salerno, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Rhineland campaigns.  He served as an anti-aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Crewman.  He received four bronze stars and bronze arrowhead on campaign medals, Good Conduct Medal and Rifle Marksman Medal.  He separated November 21, 1945 and returned to the farm at Orchard.
