S/Sgt. Melvin L. Armstrong

Melvin L. Armstrong, son of Frank Armstrong and Lydia Hand, entered the Army on April 23,1945.  His basic training was in Camp Fannin, near Tyler, Texas.  He was assigned to the 12th Special Service Company attached to the Eighth Army in Japan.  He served in Japan from October 25, 1945 to August 25, 1946, in the Army of Occupation.  He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal and was discharged September 1946 as a Staff Sergeant.  He and his wife, Gladys Bourne, moved to Marlette, Michigan in 1947.  He retired in 1976.  They are the parents of two sons and one daughter.  Gladys passed away in February 1993.
