Clifford G. Backhuus was inducted into the Navy September 8, 1942.  He received his boot training at Great Lakes Naval Station and Treasure Island.  He was assigned to the USS Dixie, a destroyer tender, and saw action at Guadalcanal, Guam and Leyte, Philippines Islands.  He was discharged February 6, 1946.  Clifford married Donna Shabram of Neligh in 1946 and they farmed northeast of Neligh for a few years. They moved to Washougal, Washington where he worked in a woolen mill.  They had five children.  Donna died in 1982 and Clifford in 1984.
