Melvin G. Emde entered the service on May 24, 1944 as a heavy machine-gunner with the 274th Regiment, 70th Division.  He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart and other medals.  He received a medical discharge on December 7, 1945, due to the loss of his left leg.
