Carrie Marie (Petersen) Brandt

Carrie Marie Petersen was born September 12, 1880, at Copenhagen, Denmark, to Nels and Christiana Petersen, and passed away at 10:30 p.m. Monday evening, July 17, 1950 at the Tilden hospital at the age of sixty-nine years, ten months and five days. At the age of two she, with her parents and older sister, Anna, came to America, settling in Omaha. They lived here for ten years, then moving to a farm southeast of Brunswick. Since then she had made her home in Antelope County. The past thirty-six years were spent in her home one-mile east and four north of Oakdale. She was united in marriage to Charles Downs in the year of 1896. To this union three sons and one daughter were born. The oldest son, George, passed away when he was nearly a year old. On June 30, 1914, she was united in marriage to Fred Brandt. To this union one son and one daughter were born. Mrs. Brandt was first stricken with the dread disease of cancer in the early spring of 1948. In spite of all that medical aid and loving hands could do, she grew steadily worse and on Monday, May 15, she was taken to the Tilden hospital and as the days went on and she still lived, hope again grew that this mother and friend would be spared for many years to come. But she slowly grew weaker and the life that had been so useful and thoughtful to others was incapable of sustaining itself, and she quietly went to sleep at her usual time to sleep each night. With the passing of this citizen the family loses one whose whole life was spent in service to her lived ones, her home and beautiful flowers she loved so well. A loving memory of her will always remain ling after the last farewells have been said in the hearts of her family and many friends. The past several months she was a complete invalid and suffered intense pain and was tenderly cared for by her family. She bore pain cheerfully, with always a smile and kind word for her family. Her pastor, Rev. Victor Engleman, ministered her to in a spiritual way. She was baptized in the Danish Lutheran Church. Her parents preceded her in death as did her small son, George, and a younger brother, Lars. Beside her husband, she leaves two daughters and three sons: Elbert Downs of Tilden, Walter Downs of Oakdale, Mrs. Thomas Schutt of Neligh, Ben Brandt of Oakdale and Lucille Brandt at home; three daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; ten grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Anna Rice of Raton, NM., Mrs. Vella Denson of Tilden and Mrs. Elsie Norris of Brunswick; one brother, Walter Petersen of Grants Pass, Or. Besides many other relatives and a host of friends who will long mourn for this dear one. Funeral services were held Friday, July 21, at the Evangelical and Reformed Lutheran Church in Tilden, Rev. R. M. Jensen of Columbus officiating. Burial was in the IOOF cemetery in Tilden.
