Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-May 3, 1934

Calton LEWIS BRETZ

Calton Lewis BRETZ was born at Wilton, Iowa, October 29, 1876. He moved with his parents to Oakdale, Nebraska at the age of seven years and had since resided in or around Oakdale. Since September he had been bedfast, patiently enduring his long suffering until he was called home on April 24, 1934. He was united in marriage to Miss Carrie SMITH on July 15, 1906. To this union two sons were born, Darryl of Oakdale and Nial of Plainview. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, two sons, and two grandsons, two brothers, E. S. BRETZ of Loveland, Colorado and F. I. BRETZ of Brownsville, Texas; three sisters, Mrs Charles MCINTOSH of Los Angeles, California, Mrs Emma LAW of Northeast Pennsylvania and Mrs J. H. SLUSTER of Oakdale. Also several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon, Rev F. V. MANN officiating assisted by Rev. Otto FINK. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

DARRYL LEWIS BRETZ

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5 at the Grace Lutheran Church at Neligh for Darryl Lewis BRETZ with the Rev. Marion VON RENTZELL officiating. Interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery with Merle BRINK, Raymond CROSIER, Orville SHERMAN, Bud ALBERTS, Floyd KINNAN and Don WILSON serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jim LYONS, Stan SANNE, Ralph EDWARDS, Art LICHTENBERG, Orris BRINK, Lyle MILLER and Ivan KINNAN. Darryl Lewis BRETZ, son of Calton and Carrie SMITH BRETZ, was born September 2, 1907 at Oakdale and died April 2, 1975 at the BROWN County Hospital at Ainsworth at the age of 67 years and seven months. He grew to manhood at Oakdale and was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church at the time of his death. On October 10, 1934 at Yankton, South Dakota, he was married to Miss Murle SASSE and to this union one daughter was born. The couple made their home on a farm near Oakdale until 1946 when they moved into Oakdale. Survivors include his wife, Murle of Oakdale, daughter, Mrs William (Marilyn Kay) YATES of Ainsworth, two grandsons, Bill and Bob YATES and a number of nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Nial BRETZ.

JOHN HENRY BRETZ

Abridged: John Henry BRETZ dropped dead in front of his home Monday afternoon, January 21, 1907. Mr BRETZ was born in Daugshin County, Pennsylvania, April 20, 1832. He was married November 12, 1858 to Miss Martha J CARL, who with four sons and four daughters survive. In 1878, the family came to Nebraska and in 1884 to Antelope County. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Church, Rev R. F. SHACKLOCK officiating. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

MARTHA JANE CARL BRETZ

Martha Jane Carl was born at Ichesburg, PA, September 18, 1836, and died at her home in Oakdale, Nebraska, February 24, 1915. On November 12, 1858 she was united in marriage to John H BRETZ and to this union eleven children were born, 7 sons and 4 daughters. Four sons and four daughters survive. Mr. BRETZ died several years ago. In 1879, the deceased came with her family to Nebraska and in 1884 the family home was established in Antelope County. During the past 30 years she has resided in or near Oakdale, where she was beloved by all who knew her. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church. Interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

MURLE V SASSE BRETZ

Funeral services for Murle BRETZ, 86, of Oakdale, will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, February 19 at the Grace Lutheran Church in Neligh. The Rev. Daniel DEARDOFF will officiate. Pallbearers will be Stan SANNE, Dick SONNENFELT, Raymond CROSIER, Maurice WAGNER, Keith COOPER and Vern CLAUSEN. Murle V SASSE, daughter of Ernest and Minnie JAEKE SASSE, was born February 15, 1912 in Stanton County. She moved with her parents to Oakdale in 1916 where she attended schools. She graduated from Oakdale High School in 1930 and from Barnes Commercial College in Denver, CO, in 1931. On October 10, 1934, she married Darryl L BRETZ at Yankton, SD and they made their home in Oakdale. Mrs. BRETZ worked in the medical records department at Antelope Memorial Hospital for 17 years. Her husband died April 2, 1975. She was baptized March 5, 1912, in Cuming County. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Neligh and was confirmed there on November 28, 1926. She also served as the church pianist for many years. Mrs. BRETZ died Sunday, February 15, 1998 at Antelope Memorial Hospital in Neligh. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother and two sisters. Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Marilyn Kay and William YATES of Clearwater; two grandchildren, one great grandchild, two step great grandchildren and three step great great grandchildren.
