CHARLES L. BRITTAIN

Died on Wednesday, April 17, 1889, at his home in St. Clair Valley, Charles L. BRITTAIN, in the 23rd year of his age. Charley was born in Effingham County, Illinois on December 11, 1865 and lived in Ford and Champaign counties until emigrating to this state in April 1882. Thus for seven years, Charley has been with us. For many years an invalid suffering with asthma, he was taken suddenly worse on Saturday last, but seemed to get better again in a few days. On Wednesday there was a sudden change for the worse. The absent sister quickly summoned but arrived too late to see her brother alive. Death took from us a dear companion, a kind friend and genial postmaster.

He giveth his beloved sleep

How sweet the promise given!

For it fortells a harbor safe

For those who live in heaven.

No more his quiet footsteps

No more his willing hand,

No more dear Charley’s presence

Nor e’en a farewell spoken,

So quick the summons came.

It found him watching, waiting

He had not lived in vain.

But there’s one more tie in Heaven

To draw us nearer home.

And we say, farewell, beloved one,

Until our labor’s done.

A. Friend
