CARRIER DEAD
Albert Brodie, for Over Thirty years Rural Mail Carrier Died Christmas Day
Many hearts in this community were saddened Christmas Day, when Albert Brodie, one of Orchard’s prominent citizens passed away about five in the afternoon. On Tuesday previous to his death, he became ill and was unable to make his daily trip on the mail route and from that time on his condition grew worse until death came.
“Bert” Brodie, as he was familiarly called, was an energetic, community minded man, ready and willing to assist in every worthy community and individual need. His word was as good as his bond. He considered his work a trust to be discharged faithfully. Through storm and stress, over difficulty and often hazardous roads, his patrons knew that if it were humanly possible their mail would be delivered and on time. His place in the community will be indeed difficult to fill.
Albert Brodie, youngest son of Wilson and Hanna Amelia Longmuir Brodie, was born July 7, 1879 at Pontiac, Michigan, and departed this life on December 25, 1942 aged 63 years, five months and 18 days.
He was one of eight children of which one brother, William, residing at Romeo, Michigan survives him.  The other children were Julia, Gabriel, John, Sarah Arelia, Frances Mary and Louis.
When Albert was about two years old his parents moved to Nebraska, settling in the Brodie Post Office community about twelve miles north of Stuart. His later teen years and early 20’s where spent in Colorado, near the Royal Gorge. When he was about 25 years of age he returned to Nebraska, first locating at Ewing. Later his home was at Venus. For 36 years he has made his home at Orchard. At one time he carried the Star Route out of Orchard.  His service in the R.F.D mail route from Orchard is 33 years, the last seven of which he has had responsibility of the consolidated route.
He was married to Zola Bell Manning on September 28, 1904 and to this union one son, Gail, was born. He was baptized into Christ in 1911 and has retained his membership in the Church of Christ during the years since. Most of his Christian life he has been a faithful teacher of a Bible class and in later years has served as an Elder of the congregation.
For some 28 years he has been a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge of Orchard severing as Secretary during the later 25 years. He was also past President of the N.E. Nebraska Rural Letter Carriers Association.
He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, his son and daughter-in-law, in business in Orchard, two granddaughters, Marilyn and Sandra, his brother William, fifteen nieces and nephews and the countless friends made during the long residence in this community.  One nephew, Louis Robertson, a son of Julia Elizabeth, has for the past 25 years made his home with the family.
Funeral services were held at the Christian church of this place, Monday afternoon at two o’clock, conducted by Rev. G.B. Dunning of Broken Bow. (Rev. Dunning was a brother-in-law of the deceased). Interment was made in the Orchard cemetery. Chorister, Ed Hoag; Pianist, Mrs. Orval Hickerson; Pallbearers, F.D. Strope, R.R. Reed, Henry Wehenkle, Roy Robertson, Orval Hickerson, D.B. McNabb. Services at the cemetery were in charge of the Odd Fellows.
