Jesse Marion Carnes

Jesse Marion Carnes, second son of J.V. and Nancy Adams Carnes was born June 14, 1866 at Cedar Creek, Nebr., and passed away, August 1, 1941 at his home in Neligh at the age of 75 years 1 month and 18 days. He became a member of the Christian church at Greenwood, Neb., at an early age. He was married to Luella Brown, Febr. 19, 1888 at Greenwood, Neb. To this union were born six children, one son Charles, dying in infancy and another son, Vernon passing away, Jan. 10, 1918 at Camp Cody, Deming, New Mex. He engaged in farming when a young man, moving from Wabash, Neb., to Antelope county in 1905. He later moved to Neligh, where his wife passed away on May 17, 1930. He leaves to mourn their loss four children. Mrs. Zetta Miller and J. Earl Miller of Neligh; Mrs. Donzella Brown and Sterling of Omaha; three brothers, six sisters, eighteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

HILDA MAE BICKFORD CARNES

Hilda Carnes, 80, of rural Carroll died Thursday at Providence Medical Center in Wayne. Services were held Saturday at the Wiltse Mortuary in Wayne. Hilda Mae Carnes, the daughter of Elger and Nettie Nies Bickford (Alger and Nettie Nies Bickford) was born on Sept. 10, 1901 at Oakdale. She married Sterling Carnes on April 19, 1918 at Neligh. The couple farmed near Neligh and later lived in Neligh, Pilger, Omaha, and Ft. Calhoun and most recently near Carroll. Survivors include her husband, Sterling of Carroll; three sons, Melvin and Stanley, both of Blair and Robert of Carroll; two daughters, Mrs. Loren (Marian) McTee and Mrs. Charles (Joy) Phillips, both of Omaha; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Eva Hanson of Butte. She is also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and two sisters. Pallbearers were Robert Allgood, Jay Payne, Ray and Charles McTee and Stan and Randy Mencke. Burial was at the Oakdale Cemetery in Oakdale with Wiltse Mortuary in charge of arrangements.

LUELLA MAE BROWN CARNES

On April the 2nd 1868 there was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas BROWN, a baby daughter; Luella Mae. Upon reaching womanhood’s estate this daughter was united in marriage to Jesse M. CARNES at Greenwood, Nebraska on February the 19th 1888. To this union six children were born, two of them preceeding her in death; one, Charles Alfred, dying in infancy, and J. Vernon, while training at Camp Cody, New Mexico. The living children are, J. Earl, Mrs. M.A. MILLER; Mrs. Donella BROWN, and Sterling all of Neligh. She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, her childen, 18 grandchildren, and one great grandchild in her immediate family, many near relatives and a host of friends who will sadly miss her presence from their circle. When Mrs. CARNES was nineteen years old she was united with the Church of Christ and has remained loyal to her faith through the passing years. She looked forward with much joy to the forming of the organization in Neligh and her passing is most deeply regretted by pastor and people alike. She passed away at Norfolk Nebraska in the afternoon of May 17, 1930. She was a member of the woman's relief corps, and a gold star mother of the auxiliary. She was a 'kind and loving mother and a genuine neighbor always ready at a moments notice to help those in need; sacrificing herself for others. Her memory will always remain a joy and a benediction to her friends and loved ones. Sterling CARNES

Funeral services for Sterling Carnes, 88, of Elgin were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 4 at Hoepfinger-Beyer Funeral Home in Neligh with Rev. Gary Main officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Donald Weinman and Ms. Jennell Suhr.

Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jay Payne, Robert Allgood, Charles McTee, Raymond McTee, Tom Mencke, and Stanley Mencke. Sterling M. Carnes, son of Jess and Luella Young Carnes (Jess and Luella Brown Carnes), was born Aug. 23, 1900 at Wabash in Cass County, and died April 2, 1989, at the Neligh Nursing Center. He attended rural school in the Wabash area. On April 19, 1918, he was married to Hilda Bickford at Neligh. The couple moved to Antelope County in 1930. Mrs. Carnes died in 1981. Mr. Carnes continued to reside on the farm until becoming a resident of the Neligh Nursing Center three months ago. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, one son, Melvin, two brothers and two sisters. Survivors include two sons, Stanley of Blair and Robert of Elgin; two daughters, Mrs. Loren (Marian) McTee of Omaha and Mrs. Charles (Joy) Phillips of Blair; 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
