Elias Gregory CONGER

Following a sickness of nearly a month, E G. conger died at his home in this city early Thursday morning, September 4, 1919. Funeral services were held today from the home conducted by Rev. C. L. Myers of the M. E. Church and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Elias Gregory Conger was born in Monroe County, Ohio, March 18, 1843. In 1847 his parents removed to the vicinity of Centerville, Iowa where the deceased resided until 1863 when he joined the Union forces in the Civil War, serving in the 8th Iowa Cavalry until the close of the struggle. After the war he resided in Taylor and Mills counties, Iowa. On March 4, 1871 he was married to Sarah Ann Baldwin and six years later removed to Kansas locating near Plainville. In 1888 he came to Nebraska and made his home near Chapman, Hamilton County, until 1901 when he removed to Wheeler County where he resided for nine years. His next move was to Antelope County three miles north of Elgin in May 1910. Purchasing a home in Oakdale he came here in march 1918 to spend his declining years amid pleasant surroundings, the wooded streams and timbered stretches affording rare enjoyment. Of a genial disposition he made friends rapidly and was highly esteemed. He was an honored citizen, a good neighbor, and a devoted husband and father. Eight children, four boys and four girls, were born to Mr and Mrs Conger. With their mother the following survive; Jennie Whitmore of Central City, Dora Lockard of Stapleton, Edward of Conterra, J E of Oakdale, Mertie Lockwood of Ericson, Gertrude Mitchner of Lincoln.

J. E. CONGER

Abridged: J. E. CONGER was born in Ottowa, Missouri, August 4, 1883, and when 5 years old came to Nebraska with his parents, and died March 3, 1921 of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His boyhood was spent in Hamilton and Wheeler counties and as a young man resided in the vicinity of Elgin. He left home and traveled through several states and was mustered into the U. S. Army, while living in South Dakota, and after serving fifteen months in France, returned to Oakdale, June 1, 1919, and has since resided here. On August 15, 1920, he was married to Nancy HOADLEY of Oakdale. Besides his wife and mother Sarah A. CONGER, he is survived by one brother Ed CONGER of Cherry County, and 4 sisters Jennie WHITMORE of Central City, Dora LOCKARD and Mertie LOCKWOOD of Erickson, Gertrude MITCHNER of Lincoln. Funeral services were held March 5, 1921 at the home followed by a military service at the Oakdale Cemetery.
