Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-November 23, 1933

CHARLES H DERRY

Charles H DERRY was born in London, England, August 5, 1849 and came with his parents to America in 1856, living at Fontanelle, Washington County, Nebraska until 1870 when he and Brother Maroni came to Antelope County where took homesteads on Cedar Creek. In 1880 he was married to Katie PEMBERTON. To this union four children were born, Clarence, Herbert, Edna, who died in early childhood and the baby who died in infancy, a few days after the death of his mother. In 1888 he was married to Pem Garnet HYDE, three children being born to them, Roy, Albert and Ralph. The last few years the deceased had made his home with Clarence until last August when he was taken to the State Hospital for medical care and treatment where he died November 15. Funeral services were from the M. E. Church in Oakdale and burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

LILA LEONE DERRY

This community was greatly saddened Tuesday morning when the News spread abroad that the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Melvin DERRY had passed away in the night. She was stricken with bronchial pneumonia and in spite of everything medical skill and loving hands could do she went to be with Jesus. Baby Lila Leone was born Thursday, December 4, 1930 and passed away shortly after midnight Monday, December 9, 1930 following a few hours illness. Short services were held at the home Tuesday, December 10 and the remains were taken to Oakdale where further services were conducted by Rev. SCOTT of Elgin. Interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

MELVIN A DERRY

Services were conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, August 22, at Huffman’s Brooks Chapel at Elgin for Melvin A DERRY with the Rev. Richard KLINE of Neligh officiating. Interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery with Howard Church, Charles MILLER, Gerald MILLER, Reuben SWANSON, Larry BENTLEY, and Orville SHERMAN serving as pallbearers. Melvin A DERRY, son of Arthur E and Melvina BLACK DERRY was born November 20, 1898 at Elgin and died August 10, 1975 at Tilden Community Hospital at the age of 76 years and 9 months. He grew to manhood on the farm of his parents at Elgin and received his education in the rural school and the Elgin High School. On June 20, 1922 at Oakdale he was married to Vivian Elaine DAUGHHETEE of Oakdale and to this union two daughters and two sons were born. The couple made their home on a ranch near Nenzil later moving to Chambers and Elgin. They farmed near Elgin until 1946 at which time they moved to a farm north of Neligh. In 1968 they retired from the farm and moved to Neligh where Mrs DERRY died February 13, 1970. He continued to live in Neligh with the exception of one year at Fort Collins, Colorado. Mr DERRY was a member of the First Congregational Church at Neligh. Survivors include on daughter, Mrs Harley (Madelyn) HEITHOLD of Wayne, one son, R. Vance DERRY of Fort Collins, Colorado, eight grandchildren, one brother, George W DERRY of Dallas, Texas, and a number nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter, Lila Leone, one son, Melvin Don, one sister, Zaida May and two brothers, Raymond and Sanford.

VIVIAN ELAINE DAUGHHETEE DERRY

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 16 at the First Congregational Church in Neligh for Mrs Melvin A DERRY of Neligh. The Rev. R A kline officiated at the service and burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery with Charles MILLER, Joe SWANSON, Clifford EGGLESTON, Orville SHERMAN, Reuben SWANSON and John JOHNSON serving as pallbearers. Vivian Elaine DERRY, daughter of Daniel B and Claire FINCH DAUGHHETEE, was born at Oakdale March 16, 1901 and died at her home in Neligh February 13, 1970 at the age of 68 years, 10 months and 27 days. She grew to womanhood on the farm of her parents near Oakdale and was graduated from the Oakdale High School with the Class of 1918. She later taught school in the Oakdale community. On June 20, 1922 at Oakdale she married Melvin a DERRY of Elgin and to this union two daughters and two sons were born. The family made its home on a ranch near Nenzil for a time after which they moved to Chambers and later to Elgin where they farmed before moving to the Neligh community in 1946. They resided on a farm north of Neligh until their recent retirement to Neligh. Survivors include her husband, one daughter, Mrs Harley (Madelyn) HEITHOLD of Wakefield, one son, R Vance DERRY of Lincoln, eight grandchildren, two brothers, Earl of Eldora, Iowa and Frances of Sunnyvale, California. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Lila Leone, one son, Melvin Don, two sisters, Golda DAUGHHETEE and Gladys HOPKINS and one brother, George DAUGHHETEE.
