BERTILLA MAGDELENA HOOS DOWNS

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 9 at MARSHALL Mortuary at Tilden for Mrs Bertilla Magdelena DOWNS who died September 7 at Eppley Care Center at Omaha at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 28 days. Alvin SCHWARTING, pastor of the Oakdale Church of Christ, officiated at the service and burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Richard JAMES, Roland HOUSE, Larry DOWNS, Henry JAMES Jr, Robert DOWNS and Dennis Christisen. Bertilla Magdelena DOWNS was born March 9, 1902 at Tilden to George and Caroline HOOS. She received her education and grew to womanhood at Tilden and taught school in Antelope and Madison counties. For the past seven years she made her home in Omaha and was active working with the handicapped and served as president of the organization for three years. She was married to Elbert Noah DOWNS June 12, 1924 the home of her parents at Tilden and to this union seven children were born. Survivors include one son, Peter DOWNS of Central City, three daughters, Mrs Elberta JAMES of Neligh, Mrs Evelyn OLSON of Omaha and Mrs Elsa MATKER of Meadow Grove, one brother, CARL HOOS of Alhambra, California, and three sisters, Mrs Merle RENNER of Madison, Mrs Catherine LORENZEN of Neligh and Mrs Anna HAGERDORN of Buthell, Washington. Preceding her in death were her husband, Elbert, triplets, Robert, Rubert and Roberta, who died in infancy, parents, and one brother, Merle HOOS.

ELBERT N DOWNS

Funeral services for Elbert N DOWNS, were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Tilden with Rev Vernon CLAUSING officiating. Interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery. Elbert DOWNS was born to Mr and Mrs Charles DOWNS, November 27, 1898 in Antelope County and died April 29, 1961, at the Antelope Memorial Hospital at the age of 62 years, 5 months and 2 days. He is survived by his wife, one son, Peter of Central City, and three daughters, Mrs Henry JAMES of Meadow Grove, Mr Rodney OLSON, Aurora, Colorado, and Mrs Lyle MATHER, Seattle, Washington, two sisters and three brothers. Honorary pallbearers were Carsten HANSEN and W E JAMES of Neligh, Burton GRAHAM, Lawrence TIMPERLEY, Carl FALLESEN, Tilden, Chet OBERSHAW, Oakdale, Charles MATHER Sr, Meadow Grove, and Albert Harvey, Aurora. Active pallbearers were Veldon SWALLOW and Bernard ESCRITT, Neligh, Charles MATHER Jr, Meadow Grove, Owen EVANS, Oakdale and Arnold MICHAELSON and Lloyd TIMPERLEY, Tilden.

WALTER G DOWNS

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12 at the Oakdale Methodist Church for Walter G. DOWNS, 65, of Oakdale with burial in the Oakdale Cemetery. Walter DOWNS, son of Charlie and Carrie DOWNS, was born October 15, 1900 in Antelope County and died Thursday, March 10, 1966, at the Tilden Community Hospital. On October 1, 1931 he was united in marriage to Miss Effie NIEBUHR at Pierce and to this union three children were born. He lived his entire life in Antelope County. In December of 1961 the family retired from the farm and moved to Oakdale. He is survived by his wife, Effie, three children, Mrs Bernard ESCRITT of Neligh, RAYMOND of Omaha and Everett at home; five grandchildren, two half brothers, one sister and several nieces and nephews.
