Ellsworth James GRIFFIN

Abridged: Funeral services were held Thursday at the Methodist Church for Ellsworth James Griffin. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Ellsworth James Griffin was born the son of Margaret and William Griffin on June 25, 1893 at the place which now the site of the Elgin Cemetery. When at the age of three, the family moved to the family home where he lived until his death on August 18, 1953. On May 28, 1919 he was united in marriage to Relta Cooper at Albion, NE. One daughter was born to them. His wife preceded him in death on November 24, 1943. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister. He leaves to mourn his departure, his daughter, Joan, son-in-law, Floyd Lenz and grandson, Lyle of Chambers, four sisters, Mrs Charles Lewis of Gregory, SD, Mrs Lillian Edwards of Wayne, Louie Schere of Cedar Bluffs and Mrs George Clausen of Pender, two step-sisters, Mrs Leo Adams and Mrs Ida Stringfellow of Oakdale, Ardys Bligh, who cared for Mr Griffin, many nieces and nephews and friends.

MARGARET HUTSEN GRIFFIN

Abridged: Margaret HUSTEN GRIFFIN was born in Tipperary, Ireland of Scotch parentage on June 22, 1861. She departed this life September 18, 1927. When a child she moved with her parents to Orillia, Ontario, Canada where she grew to womanhood. On September 18, 1885 she was united in marriage to William E GRIFFIN, who survives her. To this union were born eight children, three boys and five girls, Henry, who died in infancy, Albert of Neligh, and Ellsworth of Elgin, Mrs Lillian EDWARDS of Carroll, NE, Mrs May CLUBINE of Wisner, Mrs Blanch CLAUSEN of Pender, NE, Eva and Jeanette at home, also three grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her, four sisters and three brothers, Mrs Mary EVANS of Indiana Harbor, Mrs Jessie DUERS and Mrs Christie FLETCHER of Pasadena, CA, Mrs Lizzie HAYWARD of Symers, FL, Mr Will HUTSEN of South Chicago, John HUTSEN of Orillia, Canada and James HUTSEN of British Columbia. In 1892 the family moved to a farm near Elgin where they resided until three years ago when they moved to Oakdale. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, September 20 at the Methodist Church and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

RELTA MARIE COOPER GRIFFIN

News reached here Monday of the death of Mrs. Ellsworth J. GRIFFIN, who suffered a paralytic stroke at Norfolk on Saturday shortly before noon and was rushed to the hospital where she passed away shortly after eleven o’clock Sunday evening, never regaining consciousness. Although she had been in poor health for a number of years her sudden death came as a shock to this community where she had spent her entire life. Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church at Oakdale Wednesday afternoon by Rev. G. C. Robberson of Neligh, assisted by Rev. C. W. Smith. Internment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. Relta Marie COOPER was born on January 20, 1899, at Oakdale, Nebraska, and departed this life October 24, 1943, at the age of forty-four years, nine months and four days. She was the daughter of Clarence COOPER and Nellie COOPER and was an only child. Her girlhood days were spent in Oakdale where she attended high school. When a girl she united with the Methodist church at Oakdale and was a Sunday School teacher for some time. When she was nine years old her mother died and at that time she went to live with an aunt who was also caring for another niece, Winnie COULTHARD, whose mother had passed away, and they were raised together as sisters and always continued as such. In the year of 1926 her father died. On May 28, 1919, she was united in marriage to Ellsworth GRIFFIN at Albion. They immediately took up their residence on the farm where they resided at the time of her death. To this union was born one child, Joan GRIFFIN, who has been a most loving and devoted daughter and who has always been a constant source of comfort to her mother. For many years she had been in ill health and this revented her from doing many of the things which she desired. In spite of the fact that she was almost in constant pain she never lost interest I the things about her and inquired daily about her friends and news about the community. She enjoyed her home and will be greatly missed by the entire household, including Ardys Bligh, who has been with her continuously for the past eleven years, assisting with household duties. Mrs. GRIFFIN was kind and sympathetic and always spoke words of comfort to those in sorrow She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, whose devotion and sympathetic understanding were a source of much happiness to her in her days of illness; her loving daughter Joan; many uncles and aunts, other relatives and a host of friends.

ROSABELLA FRANKLIN GRIFFIN

Rosabella FRANKLIN was born in Washington, D. C., on November 14, 1862, and was married to William L. PAYNE of Washington, D. C., on January 10, 1880. They came to Nebraska in August 1883. To this union was born three children. Mr PAYNE passed away on February 24, 1926, in Oakdale. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Friday afternoon, Rev. L. A. Reger of the united Brethren church officiating. Burial was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. On September 5, 1928, Mrs PAYNE was married to William Edward GRIFFIN and they resided in Oakdale until their deaths. Mr. Griffin passed away on December 22, 1939, and was followed by Mrs. Griffin on January 24, 1940. Mrs. Griffin was aged seventy-seven years, two months and ten days at her death. Surviving her are her three children, Mrs. Ida PAYNE-STRINGFELLOW and Mrs. May PAYNE-ADAMS of Oakdale and F. H. PAYNE of Neligh; five step-children, Ellsworth GRIFFIN of Elgin, Mrs. Eva GRIFFIN-SCHERE of Cedar Bluffs, Mrs. Lillian GRIFFIN-EDWARDS of Winside, Mrs. Blanche GRIFFIN-CLAUSEN of Pender, and Mrs. Jeanette GRIFFIN-LEWIS of Gregory, SD.; 14 grandchildren; other relatives Mrs. Maude GRIFFIN of Lincoln, Walter CLUBINE of Rapid City, SD.

W. E. GRIFFIN

Funeral services for W. E. GRIFFIN were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church. Rev. A. Julian LAMM conducted the services. Interment was in the Oakdale cemetery. William Edward GRIFFIN was born October 26, 1855 in Wales, England. At the age of twelve he went to Canada, where he grew to young manhood. When he was twenty-one he came to the United States and steeled in Nebraska, filing on a quarter section of land near Loretto. At the age of twenty-nine he returned to Canada and was united in marriage on September 17, 1885, to Margaret HUTSON at Toronto, Ontario, Canada. To this union was born eight children, three of whom preceded him in death, Henry GRIFFIN who died in infancy, Albert GRIFFIN who died February 20, 1931 and Mae who died November 3, 1936. In the fall of 1892 Mr. Griffin with his wife and two children Albert and Mae, returned to Nebraska and located near Elgin where he farmed until his retirement fifteen years ago when he moved to Oakdale. After the death of his wife on September 16, 1927, he continued to live in retirement in Oakdale. He served on the town board and the Oakdale school board. He was treasurer of the Oakdale cemetery board and was one of the directors of the telephone board. Failing eyesight caused him to decline from all associations with public enterprises three years ago. ‘While handicapped with the loss of vision he still was able to get about until the time of his death, having walked to town five days before he passed away. In September 1928, he was married to Mrs. Rosabella PAYNE of Oakdale. He suffered with heart trouble and died suddenly at his home early Friday morning, December 22, 1939, aged eighty-four years, one month and twenty-six days. He leaves to mourn his death his wife; one son Ellsworth GRIFFIN of near Elgin; 4 daughters Mrs. Lillian EDWARDS, Winside, Mrs. Eva SCHERE, Cedar Bluyffs, Mrs. Blanche CLAUSEN, Pender, Mrs. Jeanette LEWIS, Gregory, SD.; 3 stepchildren, Mrs Ida STRINGFELLOW and Mrs May ADAMS, Oakdale and Frank PAYNE, Neligh; six grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; and a host of friends. Those from a distance who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. L. A. SCHERE, Miss Helen KAPLAN and Louis KNUTZEN and daughter Milre of Cedar Bluffs; Mr. and Mrs. Dave EDWARDS and Mrs. Griff EDWARDS of Winside; Mr. and Mrs. George Clausen, Reid and Beverly of Pender; Mrs. Maude GRIFFIN and Alberta of Lincoln; Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. LEWIS of Gregory, SD.; Mr. and Mrs. J. M. STRINGFELLOW of North Platte.
