Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-September 3, 1926

GEORGE WASHINGTON HOLCOMB

George Washington HOLCOMB was born in Poynette, Columbia County, Wisconsin January 5, 1878. He came to Antelope County with his parents in 1878. After many years on the farm, he sold the old home and moved to Elgin where he resided until the time of his death which occurred on August 21, 1926. He was seventy-five years, seven months and sixteen days old at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn, two brothers, Justin and Emery, with the latter of who he had made his home. Two brothers, James and NORMAN, and two sisters, Elmira and Emily, preceded him to the Great Beyond. He also leaves nieces and nephews and a wide circle of friends. The deceased was a man of big heart and kind disposition. He was always interested in the welfare of his friends and neighbors and willing to help them in time of need. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church and interment made at the Oakdale Cemetery.

HARRY HOLCOMB

Harry, son of Mr and Mrs James HOLCOMB, living 12 miles southwest of Oakdale, died Wednesday, March 17, 1909, after a short illness of scarlet fever. He was born in Antelope County on November 12, 1893. Surviving are his parents, four brothers and four sisters. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery with Rev. CUNNINGHAM officiating.

James Nathan HOLCOMB

James Nathan Holcomb was born in Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin, August 19, 1853. From here he moved with his parents to Fillmore county, Minnesota and from there to Antelope County, Nebraska in 1878 where he resided till the last great call came Thursday afternoon, March 1, 1923. He answered the summons at the age of 69 years, 6 months and 10 days. He was united in wedlock to Susanah Gier at Neligh, Nebraska, November 15, 1881. To this union was born nine children, five boys and four girls, Henry and Harry having preceded him to the great beyond, thus leaving to mourn for and miss him his wife, four daughters, Mrs Charles Wilson of Oakdale, Mrs Lew Gregerson of Newman Grove, Mrs William Clark of Elgin, and Mrs Silas McAlister of Elgin and three sons, Frank of Oakdale, Roy at home, and Fred of Neligh; also four brothers, George, Norman, Emery and Justin, nineteen grandchildren, besides nieces and nephews together with a host of friends. And thus passes from our midst another pioneer and former pillar of the early days of our county. So do the fathers hand down to the sons the fruit of their toil. Funeral services were held in the Star U B Church conducted by Rev. A. B. Small, Monday. Interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery. The pallbearers were J. D. Miller, Brooks Carmichael, Martin Deville, J. D. Kesling, Charles Newton and O. K. Oliverson.

HENRY HERBERT HOLCOMB

Henry Herbert HOLCOMB, son of Mr and Mrs James HOLCOMB of Cedar Township, died Friday morning, November 1, 1918, at the home of his parents of influenza. He was sick only a few days. The deceased was born in Boone County, Nebraska, May 25, 1882 and one year later came with his parents to Antelope County where he continued to live until the time of his death. He is survived by his parents, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs C. C. WILSON of Oakdale, Mrs Lou GREGERSON of Newman Grove, Frank of Oakdale, Roy, now serving in the U. S. Army, Fred, Mrs Will Clark and Mrs Silas MCALLISTER of Oakdale. One brother, Harry, died about ten years ago. Funeral services were held Sunday, conducted by Rev. J. P. BLAKELEY and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.

KENNETH ARTHUR HOLCOMB

Funeral services for Kenneth HOLCOMB of Oakdale were held Monday, April 2 at the St Francis Catholic Church in Neligh. Fr. Clifford Stevens officiated at the services with burial in the Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Fred SCHULTZ, Robert SHENSHEW, John SCHULTZ, Larry THOMPSON, Doug MCKIBBON and Louis BOLLING. Kenneth Arthur HOLCOMB, son of Oscar J and Agnes KALLHOFF HOLCOMB, was born January 5, 1947 at Elgin and died near Neligh mar 30, 1979 as a result of an automobile accident. He grew up in the Star community east of Elgin where he attended school and later the Oakdale High School. On October 24, 1965 he was married to Janice Kay ULRICH at St Francis Catholic Church in Neligh. He was a member of the St Francis Catholic Church and was employed at a truck driver for Gillette Dairy. Prior to returning to Oakdale about nine months ago he had resided in Hastings and most recently in Norfolk. Survivors include his wife, Janice, two daughters, Pamelia and Kristy, his mother, Mrs Robert (Agnes) O’DEY of Tilden, one sister, Mrs Jolene SCHROEDER of Norfolk, nine step brothers, one step sister, three nephews, one niece and three aunts. He was preceded in death by his father.

MARJORIE ELLEN EDWARDS HOLCOMB

Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 5 at 2 p.m. at Hoepfinger’s Home for Funerals for Mrs Richard HOLCOMB of Neligh with burial in the Oakdale Cemetery. The Rev. Richard A KLINE officiated at the service and pallbearers were Ivan KINNAN, Leonard OBERSHAW, Louis KINNAN, Bob O’DAY, Kenneth HOLCOMB and Ray POLLOCK. Marjorie Ellen HOLCOMB, daughter of Kit and Martha EDWARDS, was born June 23, 1906 southwest of Clearwater and died December 2, 1967 at the Lutheran Community Hospital in Norfolk at the age of 61 years, 5 months and 11 days. On June 23, 1938 she was married at Pierce to Richard E HOLCOMB. She was baptized and joined the Park Center Congregational Church and transferred to the Neligh Congregational Church in 1947. She lived all her life in Antelope County. Survivors include her husband, Richard, one daughter, Mrs Donald (Martha) PRUDEN of St Edward, three sons, Carroll I NEWBURN of Neligh, Lewis E of Oklahoma City and Robert C of Norfolk, brother, Lewis EDWARDS of Clearwater and five grandchildren.

NORMAN NODIAH HOLCOMB

NORMAN Nodiah HOLCOMB was born in Lodi, Columbia County, Wisconsin June 15,1856. From here he moved with his parents to Filmore County, Minnesota and from there to Antelope County, Nebraska in 1878 where he resided until the last great call came; Thursday, March 5, 1925. He answered the call at the age of 68 years, 8 months and 20 days. He was united in marriage to Lydia Ellen GIER at Neligh the 9th day of June 1893. To this union were born five children, two sons and three daughters. He leaves to mourn his loss, a loving wife, two sons and three daughters, Mrs G. BERRY of Elgin, NE, Mrs Emmett SPRAGUE of Platte, SD, Richard, Jennie and George at home. Besides these, he leaves three brothers living, George, Emery and Justin, all of Elgin. One brother and one sister preceded him to the great beyond. He also leaves three grandchildren, Mildred and Orville BERRY and E SPRAGUE. Also many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Interment was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

OSCAR J HOLCOMB

Funeral services were held Monday, March 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the St Francis Catholic Church at Neligh for Oscar J HOLCOMB of Oakdale who died March 7, 1964, at the Tilden Community Hospital at the age of 64 years, 1 month and 16 days. Father Charles BRODERSEN officiated at the service and burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery. Pallbearers were Merle MCDONALD, William MILLER, Verle MILLER, Paul SONNENFELT, William LYONS Sr, and Harvey MOCK. Mr HOLCOMB was born January, 20, 1900 at Petersburg to Justin HOLCOMB and Helena LOKEN. For the past seven years he resided in Oakdale where he was in the restaurant business and prior to that lived on farms in the Oakdale community. He is survived by his wife, Agnes, and two children.

RICHARD EDWIN HOLCOMB

Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 7 at 2 p.m. at Hoepfinger’s Home for Funerals at Neligh for Richard Edwin HOLCOMB. The Rev. Richard A KLINE officiated at the service and burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Morse RODGERS, Rabe JOHNSON, Louis KINNAN, Ivan KINNAN, Ralph KINNAN and Leonard OBERSHAW. Richard Edwin HOLCOMB was born June 2, 1902 in the Star community, southeast of Elgin, to Norman and Lydia GEIR HOLCOMB and died Saturday, October 4, 1969 at Antelope Memorial Hospital. He attended the Star School and farmed his parent’s home place until after their death. He then was employed in construction work until his retirement in 1968. He was married to Margorie EDWARDS at Pierce on June 23, 1938 and to this union three children were born, Mrs Donald (Martha) PRUDEN of St Edward; Lewis E of Oklahoma City and Robert C of Norfolk. His wife preceded him in death in December 1967. Survivors, in addition to his three children, are a stepson, Carroll NEWBURN of Neligh, six granddaughters, one brother, George of Tucson, and two sisters, Mrs Bertha BERRY of Concord, California and Mrs Jenny JOHNSON of Spokane, Washington.

Roy HOLCOMB

Abridged. Funeral rites were held for Roy Holcomb on Wednesday at the Marshall Mortuary in Tilden. Military services were conducted by the Tilden Legion Post. Roy Holcomb, son of James and Suzanna Gier Holcomb was born near Elgin (No birth date). He departed this life February 19, 1953 while a patient in the Veteran’s Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 63 years, 10 months and 18 days. He was the fifth of nine children. He is survived by one brother, Fred, Kent, WA, two sisters, Mrs Lucy Clark, Norfolk and Mrs Ervie McAllister of West Concord, MN. He served during World War I. His nephew, Ralph Wilson, found Roy in failing health about 18 months before his death and did all he could to make his remaining time comfortable.

Sarah Frances, four year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Emery HOLCOMB died March 3, 1909, of scarlet fever. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

SUSANNAH GIER HOLCOMB

Susannah GIER was born in Drakesville, Davis County, Iowa March 25, 1862 and from there she came with her parents to Antelope County, Nebraska where she grew to womanhood. On November 15,1881 she was united in marriage to James Nathan HOLCOMB and lived on a farm where she resided until the Great Call came, Friday morning, August 28, 1936 at eight o’clock. She answered the call at the age of seventy-four years, five months and three days. To this union were born nine children, five sons and four daughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Henry and Harry, and one daughter, Betsey. Those surviving to mourn the loss of a kind a loving mother are Mrs Mary WILSON and Mrs Irva MCALISTER of Elgin, Frank of O’Neill, Fred of Omaha, Mrs Lucy CLARK of Norfolk and Roy at home. Also two brothers and two sisters, twenty-five grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends and sympathizing neighbors. Thus passes from our midst another pioneer and pillar of the early days of our County. Funeral services were held at Star Church Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. V. F. MANN. Burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.
