Obituary-The Oakdale Sentinel-April 27, 1889

OTIS A HOLMES

Died at his home in Oakdale on the evening of April 18, 1889, Rev. O. A HOLMES of the Baptist Church in the 65th year of his age. Rev Otis A HOLMES was born April 4, 1825 in Madison County, New York and commenced his ministry in the Baptist church in 1846, since which time he has been constantly employed in the professional work. His first pastorate in was Lafayette, Ohio, the next in Apple Creek, Wayne County, Ohio. He moved to Iowa in 1853 and settled as pastor of the Baptist church in Maquoketa. After several years service at this place he moved to Webster City whence after a long and successful pastorate he removed to Marshalltown, and afterward to Tama City. Coming to Nebraska in 1883, he first settled at Blair, but his health failed him and in 1886 he left the pastorate at that place and came to Oakdale with the intention of abandoning regular pastoral work. He very soon discovered that his only peace of mind and only actual rest were to be found in the line of his profession. He therefore entred the work anew, and as a result of his efforts the church of Oakdale was organized and the scattered members of Neligh united. The church building of Oakdale was erected and dedicated and had his life and strength been spared there is no doubt that through his energetic efforts and devotion the church at both of these places would have been in active working condition. Something over a year ago a tumor made its appearance in his right leg and as it increased in size its malignant character became apparent. In February 1888 he was taken to Chicago and the tumor removed, and for some time it appeared the operation was successful. The last of the following April, however, the cancer again made its appearance and specialists were employed to treat the case. But all to no purpose, and on the evening of the eighteen he fell asleep, leaving a wife, three sons and two brothers to mourn his death. Throughout his long and painful struggle he displayed a fortitude and power of endurance seldom witnessed. He ws anxious to live only that he might accomplish the work he had planned, and which he had hoped to see carried out. In his death the denomination to which he belonged has lost a strong man, the cause of temperance and virtue, an earnest defender, and the world a self made man and a devoted Christian."Servant of Christ, well done; Rest from thy employ; The battle is fought, the victory won; Enter thy Master's Joy."
