James Jackson JEFFERS

Abridged: James Jackson Jeffers, son of John and Lucy Greenfield Jeffers, was born in Salisbury, NY, July 3, 1835 and died at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs W. J. Barrett on February 15, 1919. He was married to Miss Prudence Comstock in 1856 and three daughters were born to them, Ameda Jeffers, Mrs Matilda Yager, and Mrs Lucy Carey, all of who are deceased. His wife died in 1896. Mr Jeffers was a volunteer in the Civil War, enlisting as a private under Lansing B. Pain in co. H, 121st Reg, NY Inf, on August 12, 1882 and served three years receiving ah honorable discharge from the service on June 25, 1865 at Hall’s Hill, VA. At the close of the war he came to Omaha and later moved to Sarpy County where he was employed for a number of years by the union pacific railroad. In 1876 he made homestead entry in Cedar Township, Antelope County and in 1878 brought his family to their new home. In 1904 he moved to Oakdale spending his last years in a comfortable home which he erected in the east part of town. During his last days he was given loving care by his grandchildren, daughters of Mrs Lucy Carey, who with their families are his only survivors. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the M. E. Church conducted by Rev. C. L. Myers, D. D., and interment was made in the Oakdale Cemetery.
