JAMES HENRY KING

Abridged: Died on Wednesday night, December 23, 1903 in Oakdale, James Henry KING, aged 55 years and 18 days. James Henry KING was born December 5, 1848 in Hamlin, Pennsylvania. He came west in 1867 to Columbus, Nebraska and then to Antelope County. He was married to Clementine A BECKWITH, July 19, 1878. She died November 16, 1886, leaving him with three small children. He leaves 2 sons and a married daughter, Mrs George NIES. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, services being held at the Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. MCKENZIE of the Methodist Church, after which burial was in the Oakdale Cemetery.

Mrs. Homer (Barbara) KING

Funeral services for Mrs. Homer (Barbara) King of Newman Grove were held July 6, 1983, at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Newman Grove with Pastor Lester V. Anderson officiating. Mrs. Paul Wyant was organist with music by the United Methodist Choir, Miss Betty Davis and Glen Stewart. The service was planned by Barbara -- an entire musical "comfort" service with her favorite readings and scriptures. Honorary casket bearers were Jack Henderson, Keith Steiner, Lloyd Welburn, Caryl Carstensen, Pete Kuenning, Jerry Glaser. Casket bearers were Dick Gambill, Richard Grant, Dean King, Maurice Krueger, Myron J. Nelson and Harlan KING. Burial was in the Hope Cemetery at Newman Grove. Barbara Jean Wingate, daughter of Robert and Majol Holmes Wingate, was born November 2, 1938. She died of cancer on July 2, 1983. She had battled the disease since November of 1978. Barbara attended grade school at District 10 in Antelope County and graduated from Tilden High School in 1956. She continued her education by attending Wayne State College, American University in Washington, D.C. (one summer) and teaching in rural schools of Antelope, Boone, Madison and Platte Counties as well as working in Tilden as a secretary at the Elkhorn Valley Schools. Barbara was baptized as an infant at the Oakdale Methodist Church, later being confirmed in May 1952 at the Tilden Methodist Church. In 1961 she joined the Newman Grove United Methodist Church. Homer King and Barbara were united in marriage on Dec. 28, 1960 in Tilden. To this union two sons Justin and Kevin were born. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Wingate. She is survived by her husband, Homer King, and two sons Justin and Kevin of Newman Grove; by her mother and step-father, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Halsey of Tilden; by her mother-in-law, Mrs. Martha KING of Newman Grove; one brother, Wayne Wingate (Linda and Bart) and by other relatives and friends. Barbara had served in many capacities in her church such as Lay-Leader, past President of the Wesleyan Service Guild, choir member and directed the children's choir, member of the Administrative Board, member of United Methodist Women. She also has been active in the Nebraska Education Association, local bowling league and other activities. She enjoyed her family activities and her friends who stood by and encouraged her through her illness.

KITTY O. ELWOOD KING

 

Abridged: Kitty ELWOOD was born in Harlan County, Ohio, July 12, 1854 where she resided until 1871 when she moved with her parents to Oakdale, Nebraska. In 1784 she united in marriage with Mr M. W. KING, who was appointed to a position in 1885 by the Indian Department at the Pine Ridge Agency. She died in Gordon, Nebraska on October 15, 1906, leaving a husband, one son and one daughter. Funeral services were held in Oakdale at the Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon. Rev. SHACKLOCK officiated and the remains were interred in the Oakdale Cemetery.
